John W. Toney, former Pensacola Junior College faculty member, was appointed curriculum specialist at Okaloose Walton Junior College. He led in service training for vocational and adult education teachers, holds a B.S. in Vocational Education from Florida State University, and did graduate work at FSU earning an M.A. in Adult Education.
FW Municipal Planning Board discussed using the HUD program to add about 25 low rent units within months. The Quarters study shows families earn 85 to 160 dollars monthly with three to four members, rents 40 to 70 dollars, often a single income, usually the mother. HUD could start before full urban renewal planning, funded locally at 25 percent later, with a January 30 briefing by Tom O’Brien of HUD in Fort Walton Beach.
UPI reports Dr. Philip Blaiberg, 58, spoke his first words after receiving a heart from a 24 year old donor. Kept in sterilized isolation to minimize pneumonia risk, Blaiberg awoke fully conscious and optimistic about survival under Dr. Christian Barnard's team.
Curtis R. Wood was found dead in an Owens Apartment unit at 501 Bayshore Drive Niceville and an autopsy by Dr Gretchen Squires in Pensacola ruled asphyxia. Deputy Sheriff Donald Simpson led the probe with deputies Everett Helms and Niceville Chief Charles Commander. The body was to be sent to Port St Joe for funeral services. He is survived by a son James T. Wood of Port St Joe.

The Fort Walton Beach Planning Board rejected two Hearing Board rezoning recommendations from two weeks earlier. It backed not rezoning a Beal Parkway west strip in Pinehurst to commercial due to traffic and nearby existing commercial activity, and opposed spot zoning for Ocean City subdivision lots requesting a warehouse addition, instead suggesting a nonconforming permit and preserving an alley. The board also noted new plumbing, gas, electrical, and housing codes and considered the Governor's Cup industrial development program, proposing the chamber investigate its potential as a chamber project.
President Johnson cleared 456 congressional bills by midweek and signed five measures Tuesday night. The actions includedSocial Security boost, expanded education, and continued foreign aid with reduced funding. Niceville Senior High School Chorus directed by Neil Rawls will join Florida choral groups at the State Choral Clinic in Daytona Beach. The clinic runs from Wednesday January 10 to Friday January 12, with events held in the city.
Cambodian leader Prince Norodom Sihanouk said French advisers in his cabinet oppose allowing American troops to pursue Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces into Cambodia. He warned that sending troops would endanger children and property, and pledged to defend Cambodian villages if needed.
