Sikes Defends Resumed Bombing as Needed War Measure

Rep. Robert L. F. Sikes of Florida defended the resumed bombing of North Vietnam as a necessary response after Paris peace talks stalled. He blamed Hanoi for prolonging the war and urged Congress to back the President to press the enemy, noting Nixon halted the bombing and talks would resume January 8.

Bombers Avoid Red Heartland as War Planes Strike South

US warplanes avoided Hanoi and Haiphong on Sunday and focused bombing south of the 20th parallel in North Vietnam while continuing raids in Laos Cambodia and South Vietnam. Ground fighting remained light as both sides prepared for a 24 hour New Year cease-fire. President Nixon ordered limited north bombs while Thien criticized the peace plan at a New Year reception.

Good Year for Economy Predicted by Treasury

Treasury Secretary George P. Shultz predicted a good year for the U S economy with rising output and employment. He said the 1973 federal budget will be held to 250 billion dollars and noted food supply efforts and temporary wage price controls to curb inflation. He warned against expecting a precise end date for controls and stressed trimming nonperforming programs.

White House seeks end to disaster relief grant clause

The White House plans to urge Congress to drop a 1972 disaster loan provision that converts the first 5000 of emergency farmer loans into an outright grant. Agriculture Department officials say the report to Congress mid January considers eliminating the clause as part of a broader push to curb spending and halt most further farm disaster loans through June 30. Critics say the cut-off harms farmers, especially in the Midwest, facing crop losses.
