UMW Vows to Organize Non-Union Mines Amid Strike Tensions

United Mine Workers President Arnold Miller pledged to organize all non-union coal mines as nationwide strikes enter a second week. Talks with the Bituminous Coal Operators Association stalled over a key issue, with 198,000 miners idled in 22 states. Violence eased over the weekend, though incidents in Kentucky included a railway bridge blast and a burned mine house. Norfolk and Western Railway expects a further 1,200 workers to be affected by the walkout, while limited peacetime picketing was agreed upon at three non-UMW mines after court talks and a bomb scare.
