Congress approved a bill requiring most welfare recipients to sign for work or training or lose benefits. The measure targets mothers with children under six and would cost years of federal funding, with stepped public service jobs and day care subsidies.
Okaloosa County School Board prepares for a potential federal suit by former lunch program supervisor Anne Galloway. Niceville Valparaiso Chamber of Commerce officials and DOT leaders met to discuss a main highway corridor from Montgomery Alabama to the Florida border linking SR 85. They highlighted plans for a Choctawhatchee Bay causeway and noted federal 1970 limits on interstate construction with 1975 urban focus.
The Escambia County School Board voted to ask Sheriff Ray Wilson to deputize all coaches and administrative staff so they gain arrest powers at school events. A motion to have uniformed city police attend every function was defeated due to staff and funding limits. The move follows a Crestview High incident where a student was seriously injured.
