California Supreme Court rules death penalty unconstitutional
The California Supreme Court unanimously struck down the state’s death penalty law for failing to allow consideration of mitigating circumstances, ruling that mandatory or overly discretionary sentencing violates the Eighth and Fourteenth Amendments.
