Americans Ambushed in Iran Linked to Secret Project
Three California men, William Cottrell, Robert Krongard, and Donald Smith, were killed in Tehran as Islamic Marxist Guerrillas ambushed their chauffeur driven car near an Iranian air force base. Cottrell, an electronics and missiles expert, was reportedly working on a $1 billion IBEX project to build an electronic surveillance system for Iran. Police hunted the guerrillas, with a Paykan sedan seen leaving the scene and a red Volkswagen left behind. Authorities said the men were not CIA staff and the State Department had no confirmation of the IBEX assignment. The bodies were held at an undisclosed location awaiting transport home.

A fire caused by careless smoking ripped through the Kappa Sigma fraternity house at Baker University early Sunday, killing five members. Student Stuart McCoy used his room telephone to call the volunteer fire department after 3 am and was found there. Other members escaped from the top floors of the 49 year old building.
