A USAC transport truck to Eglin AFB swerved off US 98 and jackknifed onto the grass early Tuesday morning. Trooper Pippin says driver Henry Surles of Louisiana was speeding for conditions. The owner, John Baldwin, slept in the sleeper cab. No injuries reported.
Okaloosa County School Board delays awarding a campus construction contract for Okaloosa Walton Junior College as bids exceed expectations. Superintendent Max Bruner Jr cites awaiting supplemental Federal funds. Bids ranged from 3.2 million by Dyson Co to 5.6 million by HL Cable Const. Co. of North Carolina.
About 2,000 Escambia County teachers voted overwhelmingly in favor of mass resignations led by the Florida Education Association. An official estimated up to 1,000 PEA forms were turned in, though not counted at the meeting. The plan calls for submission after Sept. 3 if Gov. Kirk’s education program fails to satisfy teachers. G S Haushalter urged supporters to stand as a large majority did, while a request for a standing vote of the opposed failed.
GM calls its three year contract offer the highest wage increase ever for UAW as Chrysler and Ford present similar terms. The talks involve 652,000 employees facing Sept 6 expirations. UAW leaders plan sessions to consider proposals and possibly set strategy for last stage bargaining.

In Culpeper Virginia the Army canceled its permission for the burial of American Nazi leader George Lincoln Rockwell after storm troopers refused to remove Nazi emblems. Maj. Gen. Carl C. Turner halted access as protesters shouted Heil Hitler. The plan had called for an 11 am burial but dragged into a four hour standoff before the Army reversed course.
Crestview city council opened bids for a new sewer disposal plant. Rast Gregory and Deen Inc led at 146,900 while others rose to 341,271. Gavdy Construction Co of Columbus Ga bid 387,999 for outflow lines and pumping station. Gasoline bids for city vehicles went to Standard Oil at 2 cents per gallon. Buck Lee Rule Mart bid 197 for a weed cutter and 150 22 for a new pickup truck. Gerlach Motor Co. was Crestview’s low bidder on the pickup.
Orientation for sophomores attending Niceville Senior High School this fall will be held Thursday from 8:20 to 11 a.m. in the school cafetorium. Students will receive schedules and meet faculty, student council members, and officers of various school organizations.
Crest city council met Monday night and agreed to raise the water cutoff fee from 82 to 5 dollars. The new charge takes effect after September 7. The council also acknowledged the receipt of three lots deeded to J. Wm. MeLaughlin Sr and PHO Harris Sr for street construction in the MeLaughlin and Harris subdivision.
