In Birmingham two Alabama school systems must carry out court ordered desegregation despite Wallace directives. Judge Pointer ruled governors cannot issue executive orders to override court decrees, affecting Calhoun County and Oxford City boards.
Fort Walton Beach City Council approved a resolution naming Bill W. Peebles, a 28 year old local teacher, as director of the urban renewal program by a 4-1 vote. Councilman Hendrick opposed, citing questions about meets criteria. The move ties the hiring to HUD requirements for the $800 000 Neighborhood Development Program. A second measure to seek a qualified Black candidate for a second position under the director passed unanimously. Peebles background includes Choctawhatchee High School and Florida State University.
Gov. Reubin Askew's office denies sending six aides to a Jaycees convention in Pompano Beach to drum up support for the tax proposal. Two aides present were not at the governor's request, staff says, while the Jaycees opposed the amendment on the Nov. 2 ballot.

Fort Wayne residents report Allen Garrold, 19, denied entry to the Roller Dome on Feb 5 because of hair length. He sued the venue with support from the Metropolitan Human Relations Commission, which ruled the rule discriminatory by sex and ordered rule change. The Dome may appeal. failure to comply could bring a $500 fine.
Valparaiso Police report a break-in at Construction Service Company Inc on SI 8s Weal Monday eight. About $105 stolen including $10 from a CUR box and $45 from a soft drink machine. Investigators said the burglary occurred while employees opened the office for business.
Jacksonville AP report: dealer Jack Lewmain considers selling Zelda the lioness after Miss Linda Moore trades her for a late model wagon and a zebra-striped van. Zelda draws buyers including Sonny Davis who wonders where to keep the lion while watching the animal knock down a camera.
President Nixon designated Ambassador William Porter as the new chief U.S. negotiator in Paris and pledged full backing, saying he would have broad flexibility as talks aimed to secure a negotiated Vietnam settlement proceed. Porter, former ambassador to South Korea, will join sessions on Sept. 2.
James J. OConnor of the Jacksonville FBI outlined the National Crime Information Center as a fast search tool aiding police through a database of three million entries. He described a compact radio transmitter for field use and cited NCIC examples of locating stolen guns and vehicles with rapid license checks. Sheriff Ray Wilson endorsed NCIC’s value to law enforcement.
Fort Walton Beach police charged three adults and two minors after spotting alcohol sales to two underage individuals at local businesses. Sgt Poll Irish and Patrolman Bob Neyendorf led the crackdown, with Millage Cadewhead, 24, identified as a store manager accused of selling to minors. The incident occurred near Milgate Market area and the Milestone Center, prompting charges for four adults and two minors.
Carmptrol ler Bote Hudson presented the county owned hospital system budget to the counts commissioners on Tuesday. The plan calls for a 1.7 million increase in costs due to higher payroll from the federal minimum wage and other rate hikes starting in October. Ten jobs include two sheriff deputies field staff at 430 monthly and four truck drivers with $11 000 total. Applicants must be special veterans and have no income.
