A Senate House conference committee reached a compromise on the seven billion defense spending bill late Wednesday night. The agreement narrows House ban proposals and advances the defense package amid ongoing budget negotiations.
Resigned director of information services at Gka Joosa Walton Junior College Allan Read will leave Sept 15 to enroll at the University of West Florida in business exclusive management. A retired USAR lieutenant colonel, Read previously headed information for a Tactical Warfare Center and resides in Longwood with his wife and Melody.
About 75 Okaloosa County teachers planned to join Florida educators in Orlando for a rally. The group, part of the Okaloosa County Education Association and Classroom Teachers Association, discussed sanctions on Florida last June and pressed for a special legislative session to address the education crisis. Nick Vorgan of the association said talk of walkouts was not on the agenda.
Five U S warplanes were shot down in raids over North Vietnam. Two MIG 1 fighters were downed in aerial combat, while two F4 Phantom and two F105 Thunderchief losses were attributed to SAM fire. The incident continued a spike in North Vietnamese claims and U S raids.
Fort Walton Beach area faces vacancies as over 60 foster grandparents are to be hired to aid rural and Beach area students. The CAP program, funded by a grant from the Office of Economic Opportunity and supervised by Okaloosa County Schools, will pay $1.40 an hour for four hours daily. Applicants must be over 40 and meet income limits of $1,500 for a single person or $2,000 for a couple. Apply at the elementary school of assignment or call the Bay area office.
The Fort Wallon Beach Chamber of Commerce launched its 1967 Membership Drive at the Coronado Motor Hotel. President Dr William Thompson outlined aims to show locals what the Playgr Fund Area offers in recreation shopping and business. Bing Bengston directs the drive featuring two "Chamber Maids" Carla Gallegas and Glenda Meyer riding a truck with a rock and roll band to speak to businessmen and recruit members.
Milton mourns Tom Leonard news executive owner and editor of the Milton Press Gazette after a three car collision on US 90. Leonard, born 1916 in Andalusia Alabama, led Florida journalism circles and served in WWII earning the Bronze Star. He owned Milton based papers since 1950 and founded the Press Gazette.

Fort Walton Beach builder Jack D. King has qualified as a candidate for Mayor of Fort Walton Beach. He is the third candidate in the city’s first mayoral election to be held on Sept. 12. King, secretary treasurer of King and Hatch Inc. with offices at 40 Beal St. and in Birmingham, Ala., cites a 1966 voter referendum making the mayoral post elected. He questions conflicts of interest between private and public service and notes he has no campaign structure or endorsements. Born in Brady, Texas, he is 43, studied engineering at Texas A and M, and served 10 years with the Army Corps of Engineers, currently a Lt. Col. in the Army.
Valparaiso city commissioners voted to provide $10,000 residential insurance coverage for each of the 41 volunteers in the Valparaiso Volunteer Fire Department. The premium is $8 per $1,000 policy annually, with Powell Insurance Agency handling the program. Additional items approved include payments of $1.50 per drill per member, two self contained breathing apparatuses at $110 each, and protective clothing costing about $500 for helmets coats and trousers.
Okaloosa County plans to open ambulance service bids September 5 as the Board of County Commissioners compares incoming offers with hospital board cost projections for a county operated system. The current service will extend until the new operation starts. federal aid is expected after the new service is named.
President named a 19 member cross section of American leaders to depart Monday for Saigon to observe the South Vietnam election on Sept. 3. The group includes governors mayors members of Congress and religious leaders with UPI reporting the White House says they will not supervise but share the voting experience. They will travel in secure areas and return about Sept. 6.
Air Chief Marshall Boon Choo of the Royal Thai Air Force travels to Eglin and Hurlburt Field August 25 26 with five senior officers. Hosted by USAF Special Air Warfare Center commander Maj. Gen. Thomas G. Corbin and invited by Gen. John P. McConnell the group will tour aircraft and equipment and attend briefings on SAWC’s mission and adjacent units.
AML children registered in the summer reading program at the Fort Walton Beach Library are invited to a party Friday Aug 25 at 10 30 am at the library. Vacation travel films of Hawaii and Alaska will be shown and those children who completed the required ten books and turned in their reports will be awarded certificates.
A string of derailed freight cars carrying liquid plastic acid chlorine and naphtha sparked a chemical blaze in Texarkana injuring 10 and forcing 6700 residents from their homes while firemen and Red Cross workers treated minor burns from a hydracloric acid explosion The blast hurled steel fragments and a shrapnel like fragment injured a firefighter as Salvation Army workers suffered hair burns and the threat was contained after dawn with a probe planned.
