Government officials describe a renewed inflation upsurge as the economy shows tentative recovery from recession. CPI rose 1.2 percent in July, with food and energy costs driving gains, while officials expect the trend to reverse with August data.
July revenues fell $14 million short of estimates with corporate profits tax down about $11 million and sales tax $4.5 million below forecast. Estate and intangibles taxes rose modestly. Officials caution one month does not signal a sustained downturn and expect improvement by year’s start.
San Francisco mayor Joseph L. Alioto invoked emergency powers to sign a wage pact raising a basic salary to 29 540 a year with fringe benefits for polier and firemen. Sen Carl Curtis accuses AFL-CIO leader George Meany of abusing power in backing a grain shipment boycott to Russia. Chuckie OBrien, foster son of Hoffa ally Sfeffa, told the Detroit News Giacalone had nothing to do with Hoffa's disappearance. FBI notes show OBrien met Giacalone two days after Hoffa vanished, though he refused to confirm recent meetings. Memphis Tennessee singer Elvis Presley on crash diets to lose weight canceled his latest Las Vegas engagement due to fatigue and returned home for hospitalization after doctors advised rest. The 40 year old entertainer had opened at the Las Vegas show and was to perform through Labor Day before canceling following Wednesday performances.
Robert Sparks and companion G Hadden Wood abandoned plans for a trans Atlantic crossing from Mashpee Massachusetts when their helium leak worsened. A Coast Guard helicopter retrieved Sparks while Wood planned to remain in the gondola overnight as officials evaluated salvaging the balloon.
Jerry Parkman, 19, of 17 Hardy Lane Port Walton Head was arrested Thursday and charged with the August 2 armed robbery of the Moro Service Station on North Beal PRWY105. A Club Continental parking lot car was used in the robbery. Additional arrests and charges are pending per the sheriff's report.
State officials designate up to 160000 in flood relief funds for Santa Rosa and Okaloosa counties under the Agricultural Conservation Program. Grants cover 50 to 80 percent of costs to repair eroded farmland and restore conservation structures, with Okaloosa receiving 60000 and Santa Rosa 100000. Local offices in Crestview coordinate requests.
Florida State Prison inmates on Death Row staged a hunger strike last week to protest food and conditions. Prison Supt. Fortner confirmed the strike and noted inmates eat the same meals as others.
