The eighth annual Twin Cities Regatta and Fun Festival runs Saturday and Sunday at Lincoln Park. Sailboat racing opens with a ladies skippers race at 10:30 a.m. Saturday followed by the Ruckel Trophy series. Land events include sack and grafter races pole climb space walk and a 2 p.m dance by the Hopi Indian tribe. Art displays feature weaving sculpturing welding painting net tying and a potters wheel. The two day event is open to the public. Game night starts at 7:30 tonight in the CCD hall by Holy Name of Jesus Church in Niceville with beverages and snacks available.
The Elks Club invites all to a steak night at 7 30 tonight at the Salks Club on Highway 98. Admission is 2 50 for adults and 1 25 for children. Also noted is a second annual clearance sale at The Fifty Red Cat Shop behind the Animal Shelter on Lovejoy Road from 1 pm to 4 pm today and Saturday.
The Fort Walton Beach Kiwanis Club will hold a Fishing Rodeo for children starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Department of Transportation reflecting pond beside the Gulfarium on Okaloosa Island. Contestants are divided by age groups with start times 9, 10, and 11 a.m. Prizes go to the biggest fish and most fish in each group. Children must be accompanied by an adult and bring their own tackle and ball.
Game night begins at 8 and runs every Friday with hamburgers snacks and beverages. The event welcomes the public and features community fellowship at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Key West.
Destin American Legion Post 290 invites the public to a game night at the post home tonight starting at six p.m. The event aims to foster community and provide social activity for members and neighbors.
An explosion at a Delft gelatine and glue factory left one dead and eight injured. A worker was trapped briefly under concrete slab as the blast smashed windows and rattled Delft and nearby Rotterdam, with authorities unsure of the cause.
In Santa Cruz, an insurrection against two month old President Juan Jose Torres government erupted. A noncommissioned officer was killed in the fighting as members of two political parties declared open rebellion after the arrest of 40 people the government says was to block a coup.
Crestview Okaloosa County car owners may buy auto tags at the county courthouse tag office until 8 p.m. today. Buck Stokes, county tax collector, said the office will stay open past normal hours since today is the last day for tag purchases before penalties. Saturday hours: 8 a.m. to noon for the Crestview office, while Fort Walton Beach on Santa Rosa Boulevard stays open until 6 p.m. today. Valparaiso opens Saturday at normal times.
BRUSSELS AP Seven West European nations including France and West Germany sought to narrow differences and present a united front on curing the world monetary crisis. Talks among Britain and six Common Market states yielded no clear progress. Japan’s Tokyo market fell fourth day as Nixon policies loomed. Kashiwagi, a former finance official, urged keeping currency pegs to the dollar and will visit Washington. GATT officials prepared to rule on import surcharges amid Geneva emergency talks.
Okaloosa County Commission Chair Dan Merrill outlined public defender concerns clean-up needs emergency unemployment funds Extendicare and a tax placement bill as top issues at a Jaycees Government Night. Fort Walton Beach Mayor Maurice McLaughlin stressed sewage facilities as city priority and urged Jaycees to engage with city hall. Councilman Dutch Van Buskirk defended donations noting police seizures tied to marijuana cases, while Ronald A. U S 7th Fleet units entered heavy action in the northern front battle as naval guns and B 52s bombed North Vietnamese rocket and mortar sites in the southern half of the buffer zone. Despite this, North Vietnamese forces again attacked South Vietnamese bases just south of the zone as U S naval fire continued to strike targets since 1968.
Trustees of the Lon Williams Trust Fund of Birmingham sue the City of Fort Walton Beach and two others for 10000 dollars in damages. The claim asserts periodic maintenance of a clay road on trust land at the old Brooks Fishing Camp Cinco Bayou. Defendants include Mr and Mrs H French Brown and Brooks Realty Inc, with trespassing charges noted. The action was filed in U S District Court.
Fort Walton Beach police arrested Willa M. Miller 318 Lewis St. and Ressie E. Nelson 123 Rainbow Dr. for selling alcohol to minors at Jr. Food Store and Jackson Mint Market on Hollywood Boulevard. Eva Lou Campbell 24 faces charges after beer was sold to a minor at C'est Simone's Bar on Miracle Stop Parkway. All were released on $500 bonds pending Sept. 15 court hearing. Police cited citizen complaints about underage access to alcohol.
Eleven members of the Republic of New Africa were jailed without bond after a 20 minute shootout left Detective Lt William Skinner mortally wounded. RNA leader Imari Obadele among those arrested, with charges including murder and possession of stolen pistols. The group had migrated south last year and the case centers on a fatal police confrontation in Jackson.
Gov. Louie B. Nunn announced Kentucky will lift its horse embargo effective immediately after confirming the VEE vaccine is safe. Horses may enter from states with two VEE reports, with vaccination or proof required for states with VEE cases, and all animals need an official health certificate and normal temperature.
