Fort Walton Beach declares Clean-Up Week August 21 to 25 led by Mayor Ed Brown and HANDS Council. The effort targets unsightly trash and uncut weeds to boost late summer tourism with extra pickup support and resident spruce up actions guided by Mrs. H D Reed.

Four year old survivor Phyllis Peterson, witness to a farm massacre, is cared for by her newlywed sister Kathy Hill in Shell Lake. Police report Phyllis saw a stranger rifling her dresser drawers as nine family members were killed with a .22 caliber rifle.
In Tallahassee Florida Judge Hugh Taylor dismissed a suit by Apalachicola editor Joseph Maloney alleging Gov Claude Kirk violated Florida election law. The ruling held no cause of action against Kirk and gave Maloney 15 days to amend. Maloney said he will study the ruling and may file again or appeal to the state Supreme Court.
Gov Claude Kirk calls a special session through Sept 1 to finish drafting a new basic charter. Lawmakers push local government provisions but delay some taxation language while House and Senate move toward a completed revision before Labor Day weekend.
A Japanese company won government approval to construct a 1450 foot steel tower in Bangkok inspired by the Eiffel Tower and Tokyo Tower at an estimated cost of 810 million.
Plans for the Doolittle Raiders annual reunion in the Playground area next April are to be discussed today at a noon luncheon of the Raiders Memorial Foundation Board with Fort Walton Beach and Niceville officials. Col. Joseph W. Manske leads arrangements, tying the event to the 26th anniversary of the Tokyo raid.
Okaloosa hospital trustees reelected officers for another year. Bill Meigs of Niceville will serve as chairman, James Tras of Shalimar as chairman pro tem, and Dr. James Kinsaul as secretary treasurer. A. B. Moore and Earl Dyce were chosen for the finance committee. W Thompson, Billy Teel and Tras joined the executive committee. Terms for Thompson, Clarence Fleming and Meigs expire in September.
The Miracle Strip Industrial Fair committee opens reservations for 60 booths to showcase cars appliances decorating and more. The fair runs October 2 through 7 at Okaloosa Island Park with nightly entertainment rides and door prizes. Shrine Club Island Park Authority and local officials sponsor the event. All Shriners are urged to attend a planning meeting Monday at 7 p.m. in the Old City Hall.
In multiple waves, U S B 52 Stratofortress bombers hit wide targets in North Vietnam and along infiltration routes in the northern provinces and the demilitarized zone. The raids follow a string of attacks this week and a major base pounding in the A Slan Valley.
Niceville City Council authorized City Manager Clifford Wo Bean to negotiate for a 1968 garbage truck from Base Sawyer Ford Company after bids were opened with Lawser making the low bid of $5 716 88. They also authorized Bean to negotiate with Cook and Whitehead of Panama City for a police vehicle at 2677 18 and approved a $25 weekly expense for Mayor Walker Spence who is not paid a salary.
