Okaloosa County Ambulance Service agrees to extend operations to September 1 to allow time for arranging a replacement. County commissioners plan to apply for Federal Public Safety funds with matching county costs, while remaining details on maintenance are undecided.
Budget Director Charles Schultze pushes for higher taxes as a means to finance Vietnam costs. The plan would raise about 6.5 billion, with a temporary surcharge on individuals and corporations. Exemptions apply to low income filers, and the measure lasts until mid 1969 unless war spending ends sooner. Army Sp 5 James D Allen earned the Air Medal for combat heroism in Vietnam. He served as crew chief of a helicopter with the 213th Assault Support Helicopter Company. The award cites a mission on May 25 near Pho Cong to recover a downed helicopter and crew, with the crash site in dense swamp. His parents and wife reside at 112 Barks Drive, Fort Wallon Beach.
