Never Pictured Area Televised By Orbiter 5

PASADFNA Calif AP The clearest pictures yet of the moon s ravaged back side were televised Monday by Lamar Orbiter 5. The photographs taken Sunday from an altitude of 1660 miles and processed on board show high mountains and vast cratered regions on the far side. Some images reveal wind tossed textures as if meteorites of similar size struck the surface. One image covers about 90 by 120 miles showing a heavily cratered upland with a smooth material deposit.

Board To Announce Stadium Name Today

Okaloosa County Board of Public Instruction to decide on the name for the new high school stadium on Race Track Road. School Supt. Max Bruner Jr urged the board not to name it after him, despite local support. The meeting is at 9:30 am with an 8:30 am executive session, and public visitors and college officials are scheduled to attend.

Bond Posted By Shaw Is Freed After Second Degree Murder Charge

Earl Shaw 30 of Fort Walton Beach posted a 2000 bond and was released from county jail after being charged with second degree murder in the Chester Rogers death in Avust 1905. Shaw was acquitted last week of attempting to murder Fort Walton Beach policeman Julius McKinnon. A first degree murder charge was dismissed due to indictment flaws. Some veniremen considered for Shaw’s case overlapped with jurors later indicted Friday on second degree murder in Rogers death. Crestview attorney Brooks Taylor represented Shaw with Assistant State Attorney Curtis Golden prosecuting.

Community Services Coordinating Council Set For Aug. 9

Members and representatives of the Community Services Coordinating Council will meet Wednesday Aug 9 at the federal prison on Field 6. Fort Walton Beach committee OKs 1000 for All Stars trip

Fort Walton Beach City Council approved spending up to 1000 to help send the Fort Walton Beach Senior League All Stars to the Dixie League Monroe, Lit. The council also urged Recreation Department to study participation of non city children in recreation programs. Rigdon urged restricting non resident children from little league. The council also approved up to 1500 for the American Arts Festival and rejected the outfall line bid, keeping the existing bid.

Viet Cong ambush downs five U S helicopters near Saigon

Viet Cong ambushers shot down five U S Army helicopters on the Saigon outskirts. Brig. Gen. John Freund, commanding the 199th Light Infantry Brigade, was wounded while guiding a rescue mission. His helicopter landed under fire and crews treated wounded aboard. Freund, a 1940 Annapolis graduate, is from New York City. his wife and two sons live near Washington. Fighting spread to several South Vietnamese areas with reports from Quang Ngai and other zones.

Population study planned by Northwest Florida Development Council

The Northwest Florida Development Council begins a population research project to guide an area development program. Leonard Elie, economics major at Florida State University, will conduct the study with support from the Southern Regional Education Board. The council includes Bay, Calhoun, Franklin, Gulf, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, Wakulla, Walton and Washington counties with DeVane Williams of Bonifay as president.

In Jefferson Georgia UPI a bomb exploded in Solicitor General Floyd Hoard s car killing him. Sheriff L G Perry warned of possible retaliation by car thieves and bootleggers as investigations began. Hoard who prosecuted many auto theft cases had just begun the August term and sought indictments against thieves and whisky runners. Governor Maddux offered 1000 reward. Mrs Sorrells Buried Sunday

Former West Palm Beach resident Loreta Gertrude Sorrells died in West Palm Beach on Aug 3 at age 7. Funeral services were held Aug 6 at Zion Baptist Church with Rev Travis Ti officiating. Fire damages Joseph home on West U S 90

Fire gutted one room of a small Crestview residence at 508 West U S 90 Friday night. Crews from the Crestview fire department arrived about 9 20 p m and battled flames in the kitchen area. the kitchen and overhead area were damaged while the rest of the house remained intact.
