Southeastern Telephone Company announces a new central office in Destin on Main Street south of the American Legion Home. The 2,500 square foot reinforced concrete building will be built by South Atlantic Design and Construction Co. for 66,000 dollars and is slated for completion by January 1967. The project includes seven digit AY number calling and a complete number change for all local lines.
United States begins withdrawal of six Air Force reconnaissance squadrons totaling about 4 400 personnel and 7 000 dependents from France to Great Britain the United States and bases in Idaho South Carolina and New York under a dual basing plan as France exits NATO with targets to remove foreign troops by next April. The units equipped with RF 101 RF4C and RB66 aircraft will depart by October with one squadron redeployed to Mountain Home AFB Idaho and capable of deploying to Ramstein Germany in an emergency.
Light voter turnout in Okaloosa County for the First District Court of Appeal race. Democrats exceed 24,000 registered voters but only 674 ballots were cast including 362 for Sam Spector and 313 for Marion Sack. precinct 23 at Eglin AFB had 1 ballot from 734 registered.
Bob Bressette, a noted racing boat driver and tavern manager, faces five counts of filing false crime reports with the Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Department. Police say he reported breakins at the Schooner Bar on Tiglin Parkway and Racetrack Road, later admitting he caused the coin machines to break and informing authorities. The arrest followed a five week probe led by Sheriff’s deputies and Florida Sheriffs Bureau agents.
Giant B52 bombers struck targets in the DMZ while ground forces including the 1st Air Cavalry pressed the Ia Drang Valley fight against three North Vietnamese regiments. U.S. helicopters landed more than 10 000 American troops in the battle area as strides intensified near Saigon and Chu Pong Ta Drang.
Ten Japanese fishermen held by Russia on alleged poaching charges will be released immediately the Foreign Ministry said. The issue arose in waters north of Japan and was raised during Soviet Foreign Minister Alexei Gromyko's visit to Japan last week.
United States challenged the Soviet Union to stop pussyfooting on the Viet Nam War and join in reconvening the Geneva Conference to negotiate peace. The challenge was rejected in the U N Security Council by Soviet Ambassador Nikolai Fedorenko who urged deeds over words.
In Birmingham Alabama UPI reports a Beatle boycott expanding after two WAQY disc jockeys Tommy Charles and Doug Layton protested anti Christian remarks by the Beatles. The action spread to some stations in four southern states refusing to play Beatles records.
Ronald Dock Ward, 24, porpoise trainer at Gulfarium, remained in critical condition in Banes Hospital after a gun accident during a Russian roulette game. Fellow trainer Donald Hale attempted to intervene. Ward was shot in the head and transported for surgery. Ward showed some signs of improvement after admission Tuesday.
County Commissioner Olen Willy Williams told GPA members that offshore artificial reefs require safeguarding to prevent conflicts between fishermen and skindivers. GPA plans talks with local skindiving clubs to protect both groups, as tensions rise. Florida asserts strict spearfishing limits. Dade County bans diving within 1,500 feet of docks and Miami Beach requires boat based spearfishing. Monroe County bans spearfishing in northern Keys area. transport of fishing gear is liable to seizure from Tomestead to Grassey Key.
