Senator Thomas Eagleton formally ends his vice presidential bid and reflects on a possible public appeal. He says he considered no plan to challenge McGovern and preferred to return to his Senate duties, calling the decision relaxed and non morose.
Washington UPI Jack Anderson retracts his claim that Sen. Thomas Eagleton had multiple drunken and reckless driving arrests. After a 45 minute meeting, Anderson says the story harmed the senator and he owes a humble apology. Eagleton calls Anderson a distinguished journalist and says the statements were unverified beyond two traffic citations.
In Belfast and Londonderry troops dismantled IRA no go barriers using bulldozers dubbed scoobydoos by soldiers. Premier Jack Lynch pledged to stamp out the IRA in the Republic and agreed Britain’s invasion may save lives. Security remained tight with patrols and searches. milk and mail deliveries resumed. Six shots were fired in Belfast and twenty in Londonderry, with three snipers hit.
The House votes 198 to 190 to avoid conference with the Senate on minimum wage bills. House plan would raise to 2.00 over two years with limited coverage. Senate version seeks 2.20 and broader coverage including households and government workers. Rep. Erlenborn opposes conferees aligned with the Senate.
An eight person group including three children sought asylum in Algiers after hijacking a Delta Airlines jet from Florida to Algiers and collecting a record ransom. U.S. officials hope the money will be returned to Delta. Algerian authorities questioned the hijackers and transported them by bus. The hijackers were identified as Melvin and Jean McNair and their children Yallarri and Ayana, Joyce Tillerson and her child Kenya, Harry Singleton, and Larry Burgess.
Delta Air Lines absorbs Northeast Airlines in a merger approved by the Civil Aeronautics Board and allowed by a U.S. Court of Appeals ruling. The Atlanta based carrier expands its network with routes from Boston and New York to Bermuda and Montreal while maintaining a hub in Atlanta.
Assistant Interior Secretary Hollis M. Dole warned a House subcommittee that gasoline shortages could emerge by late summer and that energy trouble may spread to other forms. He cited rising prices, demand up 6 percent east of the Rockies and 10 percent in the West, and warned a third of oil could come from unstable Eastern Hemisphere nations within 13 years. FPC Chair Nassikas said recent outages aside, short term relief may be possible.

Each operates in any lawful business.
Senator Ed Gurney of Florida joined as a co sponsor on two amendments to the Military Procurement Bill. One amendment calls for a one time recomputation of retirement pay to align with cost of living increases and better support retirees and their families. The other would allow a surviving spouse to receive 55 percent of retirement pay, aligning with Civil Service survivor benefits.
The state rested after psychiatrists for both sides reviewed Bremer’s mental state regarding the May 15 shooting of Gov. George Wallace. FBI experts said they could not confirm Bremer fired the gun, and a doctor warned Wallace may need mechanical aids to walk.
Choctawhatchee District Boy Scouts of America will hold an Order of the Arrow meeting at Camp Robbins at 7 pm Thursday. All Arrowmen are urged to attend.
In Tallahassee C. E. Woody Woodcock quits the Republican bid for the Public Service Commission and endorses Paula Hawkins, uniting the GOP for the statewide race. Hawkins thanks him for a gentlemanly gesture as Democrats clash in a primary. Woodcock seeks no reimbursement for his $1,600 filing costs.
