Fort Walton Beach defendant Earl Shaw faces trial for murder after a first degree charge was dropped for a legal flaw in the grand jury indictment. Florida law may allow renewed indictment while a separate attempted murder case proceeds against Shaw. A new grand jury was sworn as proceedings began with jury questions and legal discussion.
The Florida State Road Department budget for July 1, 1967 to June 20, 1968 shows Okaloosa County expects an $11,582 forward balance for road work. Estimated resources total $759,950 with $486,900 from 80 percent surplus-gas ins, $281,288 from the seventh cent gas tax, $9,500 from investments, and $23,850 in federal aid. Planned projects include a $1,400,000 road from Santa Rosa County Line to the SR 189 interchange under the interstate system and a county-wide landscaping and feasibility study for a Choctowhatchee Bay bridge. Additional grading and paving would occur on Tollwood Blvd from SR 189A to Beal Street, 85 to Walton County line, Airport Rd from SR 85 west, Denton Blvd from golf course to Colony Estates, Palm Blvd in Niceville from SR 20 to Valparaiso River, and Bayou Drive in Destin from SR 30A north.
John Francis Leathers, 47, of Sacramento California, died July 24 at Okaloosa Memorial Hospital after being moved from Crestview city jail where he was held on a July 23 driving while intoxicated charge. An autopsy was ordered to determine the cause. He survived by a wife, mother, two daughters and a brother in California and three Texas sons.
Gov. George Romney denounces federal troop delay amid Detroit rioting that left at least 41 dead and $500 million in damages. He blasts White House handling, cites a 24 hour gap before troops arrived, and criticizes Atty. Gen. Ramsey Clark while noting conflicting official timelines.

Okaloosa County Gas District unanimously rejected Shalimar's petition to join the district. Joel Richardson of Valparaiso stated the council does not intend ceding any portion of the gas district, echoed by Fort Walton Beach's Chail Rigdon. The district also voted to open bids August 31 for a new 22 mile loopline construction.
Police and National Guard sealed a 105 block area in Milwaukee as a 24 hour curfew kept residents home. Two people died and at least 83 injured in a violent night while Rev. James Groppi and six NAACP Youth Council members were arrested for disorderly conduct. Stores and highways remained closed with limited reopening in a two hour window.
H French Brown Jr becomes the first candidate to qualify for mayor in Fort Walton Beach with city elections set for Sept 1. A longtime local leader and realtor, he urges all eligible voters to register at City Hall before Aug 11 and notes residency and state requirements for voting.

Sheriff reports Edyn Idell Pippin aged 46 of 131 Anderson Ave Crestview died at noon at home from a chest wound caused by a .25 caliber pistol. She was alone when discovered. Assistant State Attorney Walter Anderson was summoned. Autopsy planned. Funeral arrangements through Blaclaughlin Funeral Home incomplete.

James Clinton Cosson, 21, of Crestview Route 1, arrested on reckless driving and eluding after a high-speed chase with Florida Highway Patrol. His 1966 Mustang wrecked in a curve near U S 90 and SR 85, Skidding at 115-120 mph, Cosson escaped with minor cuts. car owned by John Cosson.
A new grand jury was sworn in Monday to consider a new murder indictment for Earl Shaw of Fort Walton Beach. Assistant State Attorney Curtis Golden moved quickly to correct a defect in the prior indictment drawn in Pensacola, aiming before Shaw’s attorney could raise the statute of limitations. The panel includes foreman Walter D. Barrow and 15 other members.
