A Plano monthly FBI report shows August major crimes up 38 percent from July driven by burglaries up 76 percent and thefts up 37 percent. Property losses totaled 79,720 dollars with 34,323 recovered. 53 burglaries and 196 thefts were cleared at low rates, and 92 adults and 36 juveniles were arrested.
Residents of Plano organize to oppose legalization of beer and wine sales in the October 8 local option election. Citizens for a Dry Plano forms with Chairman John Clark, steering and sub committees, and a campaign fund drive led by Gene Wireless.
Plano kindergartners fill daily schedules with reading writing arithmetic and science learning through concrete activities. Nearly 1,300 pupils split morning and afternoon sessions across elementaries, guided by teachers like Hila Pepmiller.
New York astronomers say autumn starts at 11 30 p m EDT with the sun over the equator. The equinox on September 22 brings day and night roughly equal as daylight shortens until the December solstice. The sun will cross north again March 20, 1978.
A three year old, Mark Lagos, drowned in a neighbor’s pool in Plano after apparently reaching for a floating soccer ball. He was found at 12 05 p m by Janice Darrow and pronounced dead at Plano General Hospital at 1 05 p m. An autopsy was planned in Dallas to determine time in the water.
Bettye Mischen, a 15 year Plano ISD English veteran, becomes secondary English coordinator overseeing district wide English programs. She aims to standardize standards across schools, improve composition skills, write curriculum, select textbooks, and train teachers to reinforce writing in all classes while continuing a senior AP English course.
