Aggressive City Push Aims To Widen FM 544 and Build Parker Overpass

Mayor Norman Whitsitt told a joint Chamber and Rotary meeting the City Council plans to press the state highway department for FM 544 widening to four lanes from Westwood to Independence and to construct the Parker Road Overpass at US 75. The city will front federal funds until the next highway bill in 1977, hoping for state action despite department funding constraints. The plan includes using savings from other projects to add 200000 more dollars, with an expected tax impact of one to one and a half cents next year and a completion window of 18 to 24 months after funding.

Tenants Arrested in Burglary Case at East Side Apartment

Two disgruntled tenants were arrested on suspicion of burglary at an east side apartment complex. Police say criminal mischief charges will be filed against the adult and juvenile who kicked in the door of their former residence. The pair had been evicted and the complex held some of their property for back rent. Six others were arrested on Wednesday for truancy unauthorized vehicle use illegal entry criminal mischief and bad checks. Police also investigated thefts of a microphone ice a bicycle and three burglaries of motor vehicles. An accident at Park and P involved a 1973 Ford driven by Rosemary Barker West and a 1972 Toyota driven by Judy Egbert Curtis.

Plano Phone Service Cut By Tornado

A North Dallas tornado disrupted Plano telephone service affecting about one third of subscribers in the city. General Telephone says outages began about 5:45 p.m. and were restored by Thursday afternoon after lines owned by Southwestern Bell in Dallas failed. A patch system was used overnight with limited success.

County Seeks Largest Bois d Arc Trees in Collin County

A Bicentennial drive led by James R. Risinger aims to locate the four largest Bois d Arc trees in Collin County. The biggest tree in each precinct will be measured three feet above ground to determine the county’s largest tree. Residents with sizable trees should contact Risinger at 1 542 4413 or visit the Extension office in McKinney by June 15.

Highway Work Set In Plano

The State Highway and Public Transportation Commission will perform extensive work in Plano over several weeks. Upgrades include Central Expressway ramp renovations, traffic lights at Preston Road and FM 544, new center stripes at Preston Road and Avenue K, with Ashland Oil handling intersection reconstruction and Perma-Line Corp. edge line striping. Project supervision rests with John G. Keller. Completion is projected at 125 days for intersection work and 100 days for the striping phase.

Hayden lends apology to Tunney but defends Fonda

Former Chicago Seven figure Tom Hayden apologized to Sen. John Tunney for campaign insults but refused to apologize for his wife actress Jane Fonda. In a separate dispatch Rep.
