An impasse over the teacher pay raise stalled a legislative conference committee in Austin. Senate negotiators led by Sen. A.M. Aikin Jr. rejected Rep. Tom Massey’s proposal to cut the Senate plan from 335 million to 265 million, leaving the bill in flux.
Senate negotiators push for 335 million more for teachers and a cap at 820 million total while Massey heads House talks to craft a compromise between 820 and 850 million. Core disputes center on local fund assignments and teacher salaries, with a school tax assessment board provision tentatively approved by the Senate.
Dayton Hudson Properties seeks formal annexation and zoning for 14.3 acres at FM 544 and Custer Rd to build a Target anchor store. The council deadlocked on an ordinance and the company plans a renewed request next month.

City attorney and Mayor Whitsitt defend council against Open Meeting Law charges. Bill Roberts asserts the short executive session produced no conclusions on the zoning case and was conducted as allowed. The mayor says the article has no basis and no discussion on votes occurred.
Former world heavyweight champion Joe Frazier's six week Las Vegas revue at the Hacienda Hotel ends early due to slow business. The "Smokin' Joe and His Revue" act will close Sunday after opening a week ago, with hotel spokesman Pepper Davis noting insufficient prepublicity.
