City leaders clash over joint tax office plan in tense meeting

A joint meeting of the City Council, School Board, and Chamber of Commerce failed to resolve whether the city would join the school district in a joint tax office under school supervision or keep separate offices. City Council Pushes FM 544 Upgrade To Four Lanes Next Year

In a special session Tuesday night the council approved pursuing improvements to FM 544 as a four lane divided road from Westwood to Independence with an ultimate six lane plan to Coit. Mayor Norman Whitsitt, Councilman Jack Hatchell, and City Manager David Griffin were authorized to negotiate with the state highway department on the FM 544 project and the Parker Road overpass at US 75. The priority is congestion relief, hoping to win state participation by boosting local funding.

Plano OKs 2.57 Million Capital Improvements Program

Plano City Council approved a 2.57 million capital improvements program for the coming year. The plan funds street and drainage projects, parks development, and planning for a service center and municipal building, with an expected tax-rate increase and major street expansions along US 75 Independence Parker and Spring Creek corridors. Saigling Bid Approved for New Plano Elementary

The Plano School Board awarded a contract to Emecon Inc. for the Saigling Elementary School, at about 1.13 million dollars for 52 279 square feet, or roughly 20 51 per square foot, about six percent below the architect's estimate and 12 percent below the cost of Jackson Elementary. Construction is slated to finish by July 1 next year.

Food Preservation Clinic at A M Research Center

Tomorrow at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center in Renner a public Food Preservation Clinic will examine freezing canning pickling and drying with demonstrations and home canner testing.
