City to Restrict School Zone Speeds to Busy Hours

City Council voted to limit speeds to 20 mph in designated school zones during 7 to 9 am 11 am to 12 noon and 2 to 4 pm. Flashing signs will be installed on major streets and the collector street near Vines High School this fall to handle expected traffic.

City Council Alters Speed Rules and Approves Park Purchase

The council placed additional speed warning signals at Barron Weatherford Bowman and Wilson and approved more signs along FM 544 and IM 544 with local participation. A new landscaping policy limits parkway tree planting, a large park site purchase was approved for Whiffletree Addition, and talks began on water sewer agreements with Pecan Orchard and North Texas Municipal Water District.

Solvent SS requires tax hikes to balance costs

The Social Security System trustees say payroll tax increases are needed to keep the program solvent. The annual report to Congress projects growing deficits over 75 years, with current law giving annual shortfalls, and Ford proposing a 0.3 percent payroll tax rise matched by employers. The trustees did not endorse the exact proposal but advised against using general tax revenues or widening the tax base.

Blond Bandit Robs Long John Silver's After Closing

A blond man about six feet tall escaped with over $1,000 after forcing three employees into the cold storage vault at gunpoint at Long John Silver's Seafood Shoppe shortly after closing Friday night. He waited at the back door, cut phone lines, and fled across the street to another fast food outlet. Police report similar armed robberies in East Dallas and continue the Plano investigation.

County Commissioners Briefly Approve Parking Plan Change

The Collin County Commissioners Court finished the regular agenda in under 30 minutes. Rich Morgan presented a parking lot design change for the new courthouse and jail, which the commissioners unanimously approved. A bid consideration for annual fuel stores was postponed to Wednesday. A construction contract document for the courthouse and jail will be discussed then.

No Contest Seen Against Nominee for Texas Supreme Court

Texas GOP chair Ray Hutchison said Donald Yarbrough was not ideal or fully qualified yet the party would not challenge his election. Yarbrough’s May primary win left the field with no Republican candidate, virtually giving the post to the Democrats amid some voter confusion and GOP fault for not fielding judges.

Man Killed by Lightning in Texas

A man, David Sanchez, 34, of Miles, was struck and killed by lightning while playing baseball with his family during a thunderstorm in San Angelo Texas. The incident was reported by state police and occurred Monday.
