Swing Vote Kills Zoning Impasse In Rustic Park

A last minute dissent by Jack Hatchell blocks a proposed 20 acre shopping center by Rustic Park developers. After 90 minutes of arbitration Mayor Norman Whitsitt concedes the council cannot settle the annexation and rezoning of 14.3 acres north of the river.

Plano Garage Destroyed By Fire Monday

A northwest Plano garage at 3917 Villa Downs belonging to David and Sharon Krewski was fully involved when fire crews arrived at 6:42 p.m. The fire was contained to the structure with heavy smoke damage to the house. Cause is undetermined. Firefighters also battled four minor blazes this weekend including two cars a television and grass at Westwood and FM 544. The department responded to 14 emergency ambulance calls and eight other services.

Plano Council Stalls Target Shopping Center Plan

Plano council members clash over a proposed Target anchored center on FM 544 at Custer Rd. Hatchell offers three revisions, Whitsitt pushes a northern buffer with homes, Harvard vetoes, and the motion ends 2 to 2 with no final ordinance. Weitzman says Dayton Hudson must back Target to proceed.

City Accepts 11.3 Percent Electric Rate Increase

The City Council Monday accepted an 11.3 percent electric rate increase previously approved by the Public Utilities Commission. Texas Power & Light Co will see about $58 million in additional revenues from the measure.

Eight-year-old Injured in Plano Bicycle Crash

An eight-year-old boy Alfredo Garcia was seriously injured after a bicycle collision with a 1972 Oldsmobile driven by Joe Louis Salazar in Plano. Police also logged a series of other incidents including assaults, burglaries, thefts, and mischief, with 182 calls and 16 arrests.

Supreme Court Denies Livingston Appeals in 1974 Store Robbery

The Supreme Court rejected James Livingston's appeal in the 1974 McKinney grocery store robbery that left three dead. Livingston on death row argued jury bias and disputed use of a psychiatric report, while noting the death of Preston Broyles, age 72, and two teen victims during the May 11 1974 heist that netted about 200 dollars.

Legislature Balances Money Hunt Amid Budget Shortfall

Texas legislators juggle funds to balance the biennial budget with available revenue. The latest estimate shows a $41 million shortfall after estimates for a $990 million funding gap, a $170 million teacher retirement bill, and an $820 million school finance package. Comptroller Bob Bullock announced $171 million extra over two years from rising tax income, but the books still do not balance.

Police Department Entrance Exam Scheduled at Williams High

A city police department entrance exam will be held Friday at 7 p.m. in Williams High cafeteria. Five positions open. applicants must be 21 to 36 unless with five years police experience. Requirements include high school graduation or GED, near perfect vision, normal hearing, and weight limits. Salary starts at 900 dollars monthly with growth to 1025 in 30 months. Test begins 1717 17th Street. come 30 minutes early with DD Form 214 if veteran.
