By Sara Fritz Washington UPI the Labor Department said April consumer prices rose 0.4 percent as food costs surged. Economists called the increase moderate and not a drastic inflation spike, noting the pace had slowed in early 1976.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the Consumer Price Index for April up 0.4 percent, matching January’s jump and higher than the 0.1 percent in February and 0.2 percent in March. The CPI sits at 168.2, up 6.1 percent from last year as inflation cools in non food goods and services offset higher food prices.
Dr. Donald Renshaw will become pastor of First United Methodist Church of Plano effective June 2 succeeding Rev. James B. Palmer who moves to Floral Heights United Methodist in Wichita Falls Associate Pastor Dr. John W. Plano Senior High School computer programming students won the Grand Prize and three first places in Region X. Tom Loughry won first in Education and Science and his program was named most outstanding. Loughry earns a Hewlett Packard calculator, Creative Computing subscription, and a reference manual. The school receives a traveling trophy. Joe Brayton doubles in Computer Science first and Math second. Eric Amiot places second in Games.
The Plano Jaycees with Plano Schwinn will hold a bicycle safety inspection Sunday from 1 to 6 p.m. at 911 E. 15th St. The event covers safety features and engraves parents' driver license numbers on bikes to aid police in locating owners. The service is free.
First Lady Betty Ford known as First Mama on Citizens Band radio is named an honorary member of the Mississippi Law Enforcement Citizens Radio Net. Ford expresses gratitude for the gesture in a letter to highway patrol communications director Bill Massey.
David York top of Plano Senior High Class of 76 with 96.81 GPA. Dorothy Rabbe salutatorian with 96.73. May 31 graduation at Moody Coliseum Dallas. Honor graduates listed with multiple scores and names including Tom Loughry Terri Castleberry Susan Lee Karen Lachnicht. Drama event at Bowman Tonight and Tomorrow with $3 tickets.
A 2:30 p.m. Sunday reception at Sigler Elementary School will honor Principal Bill Loggins who departs after 12 years to become Superintendent of Prosper ISD on July 1. The event, hosted by the Sigler staff, Student Council and PTO, will be in the cafetorium.
Firefighters extinguished two minor fires on Thursday. A stove burner on 11 28 a m started one blaze and crews then tackled a small brush fire near Springbrook and Potomac. They also answered four ambulance calls and pumped water from a house.
A man faces multiple charges after a resident found him in their apartment. Police arrested him for attempted burglary assault and public intoxication. He claimed he entered the wrong unit. The case remains under investigation. Eight others were arrested on various charges including marijuana possession driving violations shoplifting and curfew breaches. Officers responded to 60 calls for assistance.
