Pentagon sources said eight Marines and six airmen may be missing after the Mayaguez rescue operation in the Gulf of Thailand. One Marine confirmed dead, an airman missing and believed dead after a crashed helicopter. The operation was praised as a political victory for the Ford administration.
A monthly FBI report shows Plano crime up 43.9 percent from April 1974 with 141 Class I felonies in April and 122 in March. Assaults leap to six in April from one in March, while murders and robberies double. Overall clearance stands at 30 percent with juvenile apprehensions clearing additional cases.
The department handled cases with 23 juveniles referred to court or probation. Juvenile arrests include assault burglary theft auto theft marijuana possession minor in possession of alcohol disorderly conduct curfew violations runaways and other offenses. Adults total 56 with robbery assault theft weapons narcotics intoxicated driving public drunkenness disorderly conduct and other offenses. Officers also detained 99 aliens for illegal entry and 55 traffic offenses. About 44 percent of stolen property was recovered, with items worth 37 659 reported stolen and 16 752 recovered. Major loss by burglaries and thefts, residences common, with bicycles and auto parts noted among thefts.
Bowman Junior High School claimed the third place trophy in the Sweepstakes at the Irving MacArthur High School Novice Speech Tournament. Bowmen collected six individual trophies, with Judy Jenkins Jenny Jones and Tara Boyd winning first place in oratory prose and dramatic interpretation. Jenny Jones earned a second in poetry. Haggard team members Vickie Hughey and Bobby Biard won duet acting, and Hughey also placed in dramatic interpretation.
The Texas House approved a $721 million alternate school finance plan raising starting teacher pay to 8000 dollars annually and funding other education programs. The measure faces a final House vote before Senate consideration with critics calling it a retreat from reform.
UTD aims for a milestone 31 advanced degrees in its third commencement this Saturday. Senator Gale McGee will deliver the address Freedom Is Not Free, following a 9 am graduates coffee and 10 am public exercises in Founders North Auditorium.

Plano city council rescheduled its second May meeting due to Memorial Day when May 26 falls on Monday. The gathering will be at 7:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers of the City Municipal Building at 1117 15th St.
The National Weather Service expects clear skies for Plano this weekend with no rain. Daytime highs reach the mid 80s, lows in the low 60s tonight, and similar temperatures on Saturday and Sunday.
Washington lawmakers praised the Mayaguez operation as a firm stand against piracy while criticizing Ford for not fully consulting Congress under the War Powers Act. Senator McGovern said the president failed to meaningfully seek advice before the military action.
