Plano reports over 15 million in new construction in April with about two thirds in single family housing. Ralph Shick approved 211 homes valued at 9.74 million. April 1976 had 223 homes valued at 4.96 million. Retail permits reached 518000 in April. Fayva Shoes to locate at 2739 43 W 15th with a 200000 permit.
Donald Lee, 14, an Armstrong Middle School eighth grader from Plano, leads North Texas county champions in the 19th Dallas Morning News Regional Spelling Bee televised on WFAA Channel 8. The winner earns over $2,000 in prizes and a trip to the National Spelling Bee in Washington, D C, June 6 to 10. regional runner up and other winners receive specified prizes.

Plano Independent School district offers a Summer Headstart for four year olds and those entering kindergarten at Sigler Elementary from June 2 to July 27. Geraldine Haggard will direct with two teachers two aides and a nurse. Classes run 8 30 to 11 30 a m Monday through Friday with breakfast and lunch provided.
In Austin, lawmakers approve a $369 million public school teacher pay raise. House amendments add over $100 million, broadening raises to all experience levels. Chair Rep Tom Massey warns funds may be unavailable until Comptroller certifies revenue, suggesting further reductions needed. Beginning teachers could see salaries rise from $8,000 to $9,024 next year.
Plane firefighters responded to 241 emergency calls in April. Fire Marshal Bill Threet reported 114 fire calls and 127 ambulance calls. Two fires involved homes with no serious damage. other fires hit apartments and a business. Structural, vehicle, trash and grass blazes totaled 34 incidents. Electrical wiring caused six blazes. other causes included grease, appliances, careless smoking and incendiary. Property valued at 61060 was involved. no insurance losses, but one uninsured loss of 650 filed.
Forman Elementary was burglarized Monday morning with entry through a root. police noted late damage and possible reclassification as criminal trespass. Officers logged one theft and four cases of criminal mischief. A 16 year old boy reported a man pushed him from his bike in the 2500 block of Alma near 4 am. The department answered 70 calls for assistance and arrested two people, including a 19 year old for expired driver license.
