Serious crimes rose 13 percent in March per FBI data. There were 15 assaults, 11 aggravated, with no murders, rapes, or robberies. Overall arrests reached 161, a 36 percent increase from March 1976, while arrests were down 13 percent compared with last year.
Police report a marked rise in serious crimes in March versus February led by theft with 118 cases. Burglary and auto theft also up while 16 percent of crimes were cleared and only 3 percent of stolen property recovered. Total losses reached 82 thousand with 2.9 thousand recovered across items including 15.5 thousand televisions. Juvenile and adult arrests covered a range of offenses.
School trustees plan their annual organizational meeting after an 11 item agenda at the School Administration Building. The session opens with an executive session on site and personnel matters, followed by a tour of the new athletic stadium for progress.
Collin County experiences about 91 cancer deaths annually with 21 from lung cancer and six from breast cancer according to U S Public Health Service figures. The local death rate is 123 per 100 000, lower than the national 170 and Texas 143, with heart disease still the leading killer. Lung cancer mortality continues to rise despite overall gains in survival and diagnosis due to better imaging.
Plano Senior High, Williams and Vines choirs earned multiple awards at the University Interscholastic League Region III Choral and Sight Reading Contest. The Mixed Choir won Sweepstakes. the Girls choir earned Sight Reading and Choral placements. Senior High Girls also swept. Vines choirs won Sweepstakes in Mixed Choir with additional choir honors for Girls and Sight Reading.
Texas House approved HB 624 to let Plano and similarly sized cities build and equip a criminal justice center at the County Government Center. The measure would extend services similar to the Collin County courthouse, including a possible district courtroom, with backing from Plano and county officials and anticipated quick Senate action.
Planning and Zoning commissioners schedule public hearings on a 37.4 acre light industrial request at FM 544 and Allison Rd, Texas Power and Light electrical substation use on Spring Creek Pkwy easement, final plat for Colonial Self Storage 2.3 acres on Lexington Dr, revised Custer Professional Center site plan for a 4,000 sq ft day care, and final plat for Hunters Glen 5A 81.3 acres north of Spring Creek Pkwy west of Custer Rd east of Independence Pkwy.
At the Police and Courts Building in Collin County officials display a video taping system gaining international attention. The system, funded by a county grant and cited by media figures, records suspect processing and potential court use while reducing officer court exposure. Police view it as the best evidence for juries as officers describe questions answered today by staff from noon to five.
