House Committee Okays Court Bill for Collin County

The House Judicial Affairs Committee advanced Rep. Hendricks' bill creating a new County Court at Law for Collin County in an 8-0 vote. The measure would raise local costs and is slated for the consent calendar with a possible early House passage. If approved and signed, the court would begin operation on January 1, 1976.

Texas lawmakers push a bill requiring gas stations to post prices per grade visible from the road to curb driving and spark competition. The House tentatively approved the measure and schedules a Tuesday vote after Easter.

Lefors Tornado Levels Town Killing Child In Lefors

A violent tornado struck Lefors Texas injuring more than 40 and destroying 160 homes and businesses. The child, Stephenie Anzaldua, age 3, was killed as the storm also hit Higgins sixty miles away without injuries. Police said downtown was totally demolished and most residences were heavily damaged as streets filled with trees and rubble.

Favorable Factors Point to U S Economic Recovery

The February composite index of nine leading indicators rose 1 percent, first gain in seven months. Oil imports fell to post 1973 embargo lows, creating a $971 million trade surplus, the biggest on record. Retail sales rose 3.5 percent the prior week and 7 percent year over year. Automakers plan higher production as demand is expected to rise. Ford recalls workers to overtime. The Dow rose 4.07 points to 770.26 as the money supply contracted slightly but remained higher than 13 weeks earlier. Economists say faster growth is needed, but signs point to a recovery from recession and inflation.

Five Escape Smith County Jail Inmate Lineup

Five men fled the Smith County Jail at about 4 a.m. One is Edwin Elton Corley, charged in shotgun killings of three women and a child. Others include Thomas Roger Shaw, Thomas Milton Wilson, and Tommy Leroy Petty. one escapee was later captured amid narcotics possession suspicions.

Ford to Wait On Decision on Tax Cut Bill

President Ford will decide in days whether to sign or veto the $24.8 billion tax cut bill after meetings with economic and energy advisers. If signed, rebates of 100 to 200 dollars begin in May, with changes to 1975 withholding. Ford calls it a mixture of good and bad and directs advisers to draft recommendations.

Dissident writer Marchenko to face trial over exile rules

Anatoly Marchenko, a noted dissident writer, will be tried Monday on charges of violating exile conditions after being arrested February 26 in Tarusa. Sakharov says the 38 year old has spent nine years in prison camps since 1960 and faces up to two years for failing to report weekly and to be home by 8 pm.
