Renner City Loses Police Force After Budget Crisis

Renner, a town of 500 near Plano, resignations of Police Chief Gene Higdon and two officers leave the city without a police force. The city commission says funds are insufficient to sustain a department for nine months, with Higdon resigning effective April 1.

Campaign Reports Questioned In City Council Race

Police arrest six in Plano with auto theft among charges

Plano police arrested six suspects Thursday including a single auto theft offender whose stolen Dallas car was recovered. Additional arrests covered Dallas warrants, county warrants, traffic, public intoxication, and DWI. Police handled 52 calls, four accidents, and investigated several vehicle burglaries, thefts, and mischief incidents. In two reported crashes, at Avenue K intersections with 19th and 15th Streets, drivers Gregory Pannell and Franklin Brewer collided in the first, while Billy Tillerson and Dr. James McAfee were involved in the second.

Grocery Prices Drop In February Report

Consumer prices rose 0.1 percent in February the smallest monthly gain in over four years, with food costs driving the drop in grocery prices. Gasoline fell while services charges rose slowly. coffee and restaurant meals also showed increases, and officials see potential further moderation ahead.

Plano Fire Woman Sentenced In Municipal Misconduct Case

Linda Mae Odle, 26, pled guilty in 199th District Court to criminal mischief for the Eastwood Apartment blaze on October 17. Judge Tom Ryan sentenced her to 10 years in the Texas Dept. of Corrections with probation. prosecutors said arson evidence was insufficient. The building, a 28 unit complex on E 15th Street, was destroyed and restitution remains undetermined.

First County Jury Convicts Man in Stolen Vehicle Case

Kenneth Ray Preston of Dallas received an eight year sentence for receiving and concealing a stolen Ford Ranger traced from the Ken Sloan dealership in Plano to him. Plano Police and Texas Rangers aided the investigation and NCIC confirmed the truck theft. county records call it the first such conviction in Collin County.

Jennings resigns from IUE amid contract talks

Paul Jennings 58 president of the International Union of Electrical Workers resigns June 1 due to ill health. A IUE spokesman says the move will not affect looming negotiations with General Electric and Westinghouse contract expirations June 27 and July 11.
