Plano Police Department reports February offenses at 94, down from January's 110 and 1974 levels. Assaults dropped 50 percent to four. burglaries fell 32.7 percent to 33. auto theft up slightly with three cases. About 50 percent of crimes were cleared by arrest and 51 percent of stolen merchandise was recovered.
An early morning fire in McKinney killed four year old Jason Turner and one year old Joseph Turner Jr. and left their mother in critical condition at Parkland Hospital. Fire officials cited sketchy details while a spokesman said more information would be released later.
The Senate Finance Committee moves toward a bill exceeding 31.5 billion dollars in tax cuts including up to 2,000 tax credits for home buyers through 1976. Provisions favor low and moderate income families with children, with early May rebates and targeted 1975 cuts while House terms face possible changes in conference. President Ford could receive the bill for signature as early as May.
Texas Attorney General John Hill says a seven month probe uncovered widespread illegal activity by proprietary schools. He cites unpaid tuition refunds, forged loans, and improper loan discounts. Law suits have been filed against 12 private schools with more actions possible.
Gov. Dolph Briscoe told Texas State Teachers Association representatives there will be no $1,000 a year raise for teachers. He warned the Legislature would be vetoed if the measure passed and said the state cannot afford more than the $590 million proposed for school finance reform.
Dallas police report the arrest of Gary Don Boyd in Dallas on burglary charges linked to a Plano case. Investigators believe his capture could help resolve up to 20 local burglaries and possibly nearly 100 in the Dallas Richardson Plano area. Authorities recovered some stolen merchandise and probe further thefts including a Goodyear Tire Center break in.
The Clark and Walters Circus plans two shows at 6 and 8 p.m. on March 19 behind Murphy City Hall. Proceeds support the Murphy Volunteer Fire Dept. Tickets at City Hall and local shops in Plano. advance $1, gate $1.25 children $1.50 adults.
Secretary of State Henry Kissinger flew to Israel with Egyptian proposals for a Sinai troop withdrawal pact. In Saigon, Communist advances and air losses marked a week of fighting near two district capitals.
UPI reports major oil companies will earn a minimum of 6.4 billion in profits this year mainly from higher prices. Opponents of the oil depletion allowance say the figures disprove arguments that removing the tax break would curb production incentives. API notes former astronaut Frank Borman, Apollo 8 commander, has joined the National Geographic Society board of trustees and remains executive vice president of Eastern Airlines.
