Space pioneer Wernher von Braun, speaking at a seminar in Los Angeles, forecast that children will be born in space before century's end as graduates study on the moon and boys and girls participate in space research.
Commissioners authorize County Judge Nathan E. White Jr. to advertise for voting machines as Collin County moves toward electronic scanning. The Election Board backs MTB 1 by Gyrex Corp, though not yet state approved. Secretary of State anticipated approval, with delivery by autumn planned.
Collin County officials consider buying 22 MTB-1 optical scan units for precincts to deliver instant totals at poll closing. The MBT-1 offers high capacity, simple ballots, quick recounts, and a 20 year life, with bids sought against a $159,611 estimate.
Congress approved emergency legislation to extend unemployment benefits beyond the June 30 expiration. The measure would provide up to 65 weeks of benefits, with 39 weeks for workers not covered by state programs, and sets variable durations based on state unemployment rates through December 31, 1975.
Big Four automakers produced 150,952 cars this week, lifting the year total to 3,102,861 and marking a return toward prewar levels. GM plans 6,600 recalls for August model production while cutting layoffs to 92,200. Chrysler recalls 1,900 with 30,600 total idle. South Gate plant to close July 7 for two weeks.
Washington dispute over fees lenders could charge for government subsidized mortgages halted a rapid new middle income housing bill. The Senate approved a Ford tailored bill authorizing 10 billion for government mortgage purchases at 7.5 percent but House action dropped the 1 percent fee limit. Proxmire balked at its removal, stalling action until after the recess.
Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe announced the state does not need federal intervention to ensure minority voting rights. He criticized moves in Congress to extend the Voting Rights Act to Texas and defended Texas as having an effective voter registration system after postcard registration was introduced in 1971 and simplified this year.
