Former Texas governor John B. Connally says the vice presidency is a do nothing post and doubts Ford offered him the job. He cites GOP efforts to block a Connally Ford ticket and notes his role in swaying Clarke Reed toward Ford after Schweiker choice.
Gov Dolph Briscoe and Democratic nominee Jimmy Carter project Carter will win Texas in November even if John Connally joins the GOP ticket. Briscoe says Texas support hinges on issue emphasis and oil policy, not candidate alignment. They met in Plains and shared a country luncheon.
Texas House Speaker Bill Clayton will address a dinner at the Texas A&M Research and Extension Center field house in Richardson at 7 p.m. He will discuss Texas water priorities and future supplies. Reservations: 235-7108. Clayton, elected 1975, has led major water and conservation legislation and chaired key committees.
An evening of free entertainment at the Plano Jaycees Bicentennial Community Fair runs tonight from 6:30 p.m. at Alma Rd and Janwood Dr, featuring carnival rides, exhibits, game booths, a 1929 fire engine display, firefighting demos, and Dallas Tornado soccer skills with autographs. On Saturday the Texas Travelers perform at 8 p.m. and a drawing for three mobile CB radios raises funds for the Plano Community Scholarship Fund.
Plano residents are urged to attend a public hearing on the Cooper Lake and Channels project at East Texas State University in Commerce tomorrow at 9 a.m. NTMWD says Cooper Lake is vital for Plano’s water through 2000. Planites urged to register and prepare public comments.
Plano police handled six auto crashes and multiple other incidents including three arrests on warrants from Dallas Garland and the sheriff's office. Injuries were reported in two crashes on E 16th Street and Alma Road.
A joint work session of the Plano City Council and the Citizens Traffic Safety Commission is set for Monday at 6 p.m. in the Plano municipal building. They will discuss traffic concerns created by the opening of W.A. Vines High School at Highedge and FM 544 in west Plano. The meeting is open to the public.
Senator Russell Long secured two provisions in the tax revision bill that would not apply to his family’s trusts. The New York Times reported the measures would have benefited Huey Long era trust beneficiaries but are blocked for the senator’s relatives.
