Briscoe names state officials to commissions and committees

Gov. Dolph Briscoe appointed Henry Salzberger and John Turner of Dallas to six year terms on the state Commission for the Blind. He also named five to the Antiquities Committee for two year terms including Holden Newcomb and Wendorf.

Briscoe Asks Legislature to Approve Record $11.6 Billion Budget

Gov. Dolph Briscoe submits an $11.6 billion two year budget in his message to lawmakers. He cites surpluses and emergency spending needs while resisting tax hikes and pushing school finance reform. The plan trims higher education and state agencies and boosts funding for mental retardation programs and alternate care services.

Hearing Set For FM 544 Improvements in Plano

Texas Highway Dept will hold a public meeting at Wilson Junior High School in Plano on Tuesday Feb 18 at 730 p.m. to gather views on proposed FM 544 improvements from Preston Rd to U.S. 75 about 5.3 miles. United Methodists of North Texas plan a two day meeting in Plano at First United Methodist with Bishop W McFerrin Stowe inviting pastors and leaders from 250 churches. The theme centers on expanding ministry new creative outreach in central city suburbia and rural settings using creative ministries evangelism and church development. The event aims to stimulate contemporary Gospel work rather than provide all answers and positions Stowe as a resource leader for future church growth in North Texas.

Rebate to Aid Poor From Ford Energy Plan

An estimated 16.5 billion dollar tax rebate would mainly help lower and middle income families under President Ford s proposed petroleum tax program expected to raise 30 billion annually. Delbert M. Fowler of the Federal Energy Administration outlined rebates including 3 billion kept for energy programs, 2 billion for state and local revenue sharing, 2 billion to non taxpayers, about 6 billion for corporate tax cuts, and 500 million for home energy efficiency credits.

Citizens Advisory Committee to Review Plano Capital Needs

The 150 member Citizens Advisory Committee meets tonight at 7:30 p.m. with the City Council in the high school cafeteria to review five year capital needs. Final reports from subcommittees on parks streets and thoroughfares municipal facilities and joint usage facilities will be heard and tax rate implications discussed. Public attendance and participation are invited per general chairman Jim Taylor.

SEC Subpoenas Southwestern Bell Executives in Texas

SEC regional administrator confirms subpoenas issued to Southwestern Bell officers in San Antonio and at least four other Bell executives to testify in Fort Worth. The move relates to a $29 million damage suit accusing the company of wiretapping illegal contributions and questionable rate practices. The grand jury in San Antonio has recessed indefinitely.

Compromise Seen On Tax Cut Plan
