In Beirut gunmen from Christian and Moslem factions exchanged rocket and mortar fire hours after a Syria mediated truce. Fighting cooled elsewhere while rivals watched the withdrawal deadline from captured areas. Observers doubt the cease-fire's durability, awaiting Syria's role and possible wider conflict with Israel. Moslem and Palestinian forces held about two thirds of Lebanon when the cease-fire began.
The Marine Corps were cleared of blame for the 2400 acre brush fire near Nixon's oceanside estate in San Clemente. The fire destroyed 16 homes and damaged six, with over 1 million dollars in damage and 39 injuries. Fire mop up continued as containment held more than a mile from the Nixon property.
Mission Texas union claims over 200 citrus workers signed during a two week organizing drive. About 75 strikers spoke with workers at four orchards northwest of Mission and swayed 100 to join the strike. Fields are owned by Bio-Ex and Sharyland Farms amid prior violence incidents. No incidents were reported during Thursday canvassing.
Firefighters in Plane reported three small fires on Thursday none of which were serious. Grass fires were reported near Los Robles and Parker at 3 08 p m and on Royal Oaks at 3 45 p m a bedroom fire at 1 13 p m at 2801 Flmcrest Cir was blamed on an electronic camera flash. The department also moved water from a house checked an electrical problem at 2200 Kentfield and made three ambulance runs.
Walker Construction Co of Fort Worth is the apparent low bidder with 2,117,000 for Plano's football stadium bids. H G Ground Construction of Dallas offered 2,124,000 with eight other general contractors in the mix. Architects Schrickel Rollins and Associates estimate base costs at 2.187 million plus 0.459 million in alternates.
President Ford says he is weighing many vice presidential candidates including Senators Edward Brooke Howard Baker and Bill Brock and Elliot Richardson. He says Bush was regrettably eliminated to advance his CIA pick while Senate moves loom. Brooke Brock Baker respond modestly to being mentioned.
The court will hear murder cases from North Carolina Georgia Florida Louisiana and Texas on March 30 as it weighs if capital punishment can be used. The 1972 ruling blocked cruel and unusual punishment and justices now differ over full abolition or limited application amid evolving state laws and a new lineup.
Plano officers reported a quiet day with two arrests one for simple assault and one on a Dallas warrant. Investigations covered theft of a trailer motor vehicle burglary incidents a trespass report and a harassing phone call. Thirty six calls for assistance and three accidents were logged with three separate traffic crashes. Edward Boyden JrLost control of a 1974 Ford on Alma Road a tire blowout struck a fire plug. An unidentified vehicle hit Marilyn Gilmore at Merrimac and Greenway and left the scene. A 1972 Pontiac driven by Robert Schaefer and a 1972 American driven by Sally Pierson collided at the Senior High School lot.
The Wildcat Band Booster Club schedules an all day pancake sale at the Senior High School Cafeteria from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Adult tickets cost 1.50 and children 1.00, with coffee or milk included. A cake bake sale accompanies Pancake Day to raise funds for the Washington DC trip. The club has about 11,000 raised toward a 20,000 goal to insure the trip.
