Riehn Heads Plano UW Advisory Board Election

Plano United Way selected Riehn as president at its annual meeting. John Crawford became vice president and Lester E. Renard treasurer. Crawford runs Crawford Firestone. Renard is building coordinator for Atlantic Richfield. Bob Roberts moves to ex officio role. Roberts notes the United Way only works where community leaders care.

United Way Board Sets Campaign Goals and Calendar

The advisory board praised local residents for giving back and renewing American pride. Campaign chair Crawford announced over 54000 of 56790 raised with more drives upcoming to reach the goal in one to two weeks. Fred Kandeler and Crawford join the board, with re elected members Griffin Hendrick and others. A tentative calendar sets a new chair by April five and a kickoff September 27, with campaign ending November 4.

Subfreezing Blaze Damages Dennis Acklin Investments Firm

Firefighters battled a early morning blaze at Dennis Acklin Investments Co on 18th Street. Don Parker spotted smoke at 3 40 a m and alerted crews from a nearby restaurant. Firefighters contained damage to a closet heating unit hallway with one occupied office heavily damaged. motor shorted out causing high heat.

Foster Family Establishes Memorial Music Scholarship in Plano

Plano couple Robert and Ann Foster create the Robert Foster Memorial Scholarship Fund in memory of their son Robert William Foster II who died in a one car crash just before Christmas. Funds are supervised by Rev. Jay Carter Paul with plans to aid a deserving Plano Senior High School music student.

One Arrest Reported by Plano Police on Tuesday

A man was arrested on a warrant for indecency with a child. Police logged 58 calls for assistance and investigated a residential burglary five thefts a harassment report and two criminal mischief cases. Three accidents occurred with vehicles in Plano including a 1975 Ford driven by Dorothy McCoy Trapp and a Pontiac owned by Claude Cardwell at 18th and Shiloh. A 1975 Dodge driven by Harmon Haskell Phipps and a 1956 Chevrolet driven by Bryan Thompson collided at 14th Street and Avenue N. A 1973 Chrysler driven by Sarah Ramsey and a 1977 Chrysler driven by Patsy Stillman collided at Park Blvd and Avenue N.

Ferry Grounding Delays Galveston Commuters

The Galveston Port Bolivar ferry ran aground near Bolivar Peninsula but was refloated hours later with no injuries. Commuter traffic was disrupted briefly. Separately, Texas Railroads face a proposed rule to report all roadbed accidents by phone to the Railroad Commission, with public comment open until Feb. 1.

Texas speed limit proposals draw insurer caution

An insurance official warned that Texas legislative plans to raise the speed limit would invite more fatalities and injuries on highways. Jerry F. Johns, president of the Southwestern Insurance Information Service, noted safety groups agree speed is a major cause of auto accidents.

Night Privileges Lost At Kiddie Korner Day Care Center

The Plano area day care center Kiddie Korner at 717 15th St lost its certificate of occupancy for day and night care after Chief Building Official Ralph Shick ruled the building cannot meet fire safety standards. The center may operate only during daylight hours until required upgrades are completed, including exterior one hour walls and an automated sprinkler system.

Energy Plan Offered By Jim Langdon

Texas railroad commissioner Jim Langdon proposed a 10 year plan to boost energy independence by expanding domestic oil gas and coal. The plan calls for 37 percent more oil and gas output 176 percent more coal and the construction of eight shale oil plants 13 coal to oil plants 30 coal to gas plants and 10 geothermal plants. He said higher production would require greater environmental risk by states especially onshore and offshore and that coal mining operations would need to more than double.
