Johnson aide Elizabeth Carpenter honored in Mexican fiesta

In San Antonio a Mexican fiesta at the Institute of Texan Cultures honors Elizabeth Carpenter, press secretary to Mrs. Lyndon B. Johnson.Gov. Dolph Briscoe and Mrs. Johnson are expected to attend a $5 per person event with other officials and friends. Carpenter, after 34 years in Washington, returns to Texas to teach at UT Austin and work at the LBJ Library.

Ramsey Muniz to be moved to Corpus Christi jail this week

Former Raza Unida governor candidate Ramsey Muniz, 34, will be transferred to Corpus Christi jail to await trial. He faces a January 31 federal trial in San Antonio on smuggling 832 pounds of marijuana from Mexico, with a separate trial set for next March in Corpus Christi on a similar charge.

Laredo Debates Leash Law Amid Rabies Vaccination Push

Laredo Texas leaders sidestepped a leash law to combat a rabies outbreak. Jose L. Gonzalez of the Laredo Webb County Health Department warned a leash rule could cost about 100000 dollars and be less effective than a large scale animal vaccination program. The drive has vaccinated over 5600 animals since mid November with 744 dogs vaccinated on Monday.

Briscoe Opposes Park Purchase Linked to Palmetto Bend Project

Gov Dolph Briscoe states opposition to conservationist plans to buy 3700 acres of park land to offset wildlife losses from the Palmetto Bend Project on the Navidad River. He sends a letter to Interior Secretary Kent Frizzell urging early project completion without extra wildlife compensation measures.

Three men arrested by Plano police in auto theft case

Three men, ages 22 21 and 19, were arrested Monday afternoon after a stolen car was recovered. Police say the trio were seen at 3 55 p m driving the car stolen Thursday from a local auto dealer and will face auto theft charges. Two others were also arrested a 32 year old on a Plano warrant for bad checks and a 35 year old for public intoxication.

Plano Taxes and Rates Rise Across 1976

In 1976 Plano residents faced widespread cost increases from utilities and taxes. General Telephone Co raised rates by 28 percent, Lone Star Gas secured a rate hike, and Texas Power and Light planned a 34 percent increase. City and school taxes also climbed with water and sewer rates up 9.6 percent, and school district taxes rising. The city funded new and completed projects including Plano's third fire station.

Plano 1976 A Year Of Major Growth And Budget

Plano in 1976 planned a new $180000 station on Sherrye Drive and Shiloh Road, authorized over $2 million in water sewer and other bonds, and approved a $2.5 million soccer stadium. The city earned a $3.4 million EPA grant for wastewater plants and reorganized staff including two assistant city managers. Bicentennial events and elections marked the year with several council and school board changes.

Leukemia Drive Kicks Off in North Central Texas

The Leukemia Assn of North Central Texas launches a month long drive through February to raise 100000 for local research and patient aid. M T Buddy Minyard says door to door efforts will gather 1000 volunteers in Plano with all funds staying in Texas. Since 1971 the group has given grants totaling 202000 to local research and spent 68000 on patient care assisting 90 patients in the Metroplex.
