Plano merchants attended two seminars sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce and Plano Police Department on shoplifting and hot checks. Harry Thompson urged clerks to stay alert, noting a shoplifter can snatch an item in a second with the right opportunity. Attendees were advised to watch for large purses, bulky parcels and roomy clothing.

Cargo Ship Sinks. Crew Rescued in Gulf of Mexico
A Greek vessel salvaged eight crewmen and 17 others after the 311-foot cargo ship Melias broke up and sank east of Mexico in rough seas. Coast Guard spokesman Jim Morrison reported all eight rescued men were in good condition.

Briscoe appoints Hammond 33rd Judicial District Judge
Gov. Dolph Briscoe named D W Hammond of Burnet to the 33rd judicial district bench effective today replacing resigning Judge Jack B Miller. The district covers Llano Mason Burnet Blanco Menard and San Saba Counties. Hammond has practiced law in Burnet since 1949.
Father and son nabbed for bank robbery and hostage
DPS arrested a father and son for robbing First State Bank and taking a teller hostage. The hostage was released unharmed and $59,000 was recovered. Suspects were captured in an abandoned house east of Tulsa and held in Hale County jail awaiting charges.
Plano Fire Department Responds to Eight Calls
Plano firefighters answered eight calls Tuesday, including two fires. A dumpster blaze at Plano North Shopping Center occurred at 1 44 p m and another dumpster fire at Red Colemans Handy Food Mart 2701 W 15th St at 7 36 a m. The department also handled five ambulance runs and one water-in-house report.
