Grass Fires and GOP Convention Battle Near Kansas City
Firefighters reported three grass fires in Kansas City area today with blazes at a field east of Wilson Middle School, a vacant lot behind Avenue N, and a creekbed near Kingston and Peachtree. Fire Marshal Bill Threet said three ambulance runs were made and other safety duties handled for delegates seeking Republican nomination votes. Meanwhile, three days before the GOP National Convention, Ford and Reagan remained short of the 1,130 delegates, with Ford at 1,122 and Reagan at 1,035, 102 uncommitted, as platform writers labored on policy planks including abortion, education aid, and school prayer.
