Citizens Seek Wet-Dry Election in Plano

Plano citizens file in Collin County to call a local option election on beer and wine sales for off premises. Mary Burden of Citizens for Common Sense says the change would allow supermarket sales, with 1700 signatures needed from 1974 voters after initial steps and court approval. Organizers aim for an October vote.

Schedules Ready This Month For Plano Schools

Plano district announces class schedule pick up dates across seven secondary schools. Returning students from 1977 and previously registered seniors have staggered dates, with sixth graders on Aug 19, seventh on Aug 22, eighth on Aug 23, tenth on Aug 25, and ninth on Aug 26. New middle and 9 12 schedules arrive Aug 25 26. elementary open house Aug 26 and kindergarten open house with parents Aug 26 1 to 3 p.m.

Private Club Worksession Cancelled

A planned worksession on the proposed private club ordinance was cancelled. Planning and Zoning Commissioners were to meet Wednesday night to decide private club locations, but City Attorney Bill Roberts ruled it improper to consider the ordinance before the public hearing. The public hearing and permit requests are set for Aug. 24.

Bottled Water Rises as Tap Water Draws Criticism

Following heavy rains last month Lake Lavon expanded and vegetation along its shores produced algae. The North Texas Municipal Water District treats the water with activated charcoal but residual taste and odor persist, prompting Planeites to favor bottled water though officials deem the water safe.

North Outlet Nixed Council Opts for Target Store

The City Council favored locating a 100000 square foot Target discount store over a Parker Road outlet. The dispute centered on routing a parallel road with Cambridge Properties arguing it would split their northern 4.5 acre parcels, while planner Bob Buffington pressed for Parker Road access. The council approved a land study split option, moving potential access to Thunderbird Drive, with Cambridge signaling potential reconsideration if the north outlet proves beneficial.

Collin County 1978 Budget Open to Public Review

Copies of the proposed 1977 78 Collin County budget are available in the county auditor's office on the third floor of the County Courthouse in McKinney. A public hearing is set for 9 a.m. Friday in the Commissioners Court room to discuss the budget and the 1977 tax levy, plus precinct rearrangements to meet Texas Election Code size requirements.

Vandals Damage Cars In East Plane Mischief

A spate of criminal mischief Saturday night left car windows bashed in across East Plane with fifteen residents reporting damage before 5 a.m. Sunday. Officers investigate. Police logged 18 thefts, eight burglaries, two motor vehicle burglaries, four assaults and one forger, plus almost $700 stolen from a Mister M Store bank bag. Twelve people were arrested for various offenses, and the department answered 236 calls over the period.

Minor Blazes Keep Firemen Busy Over Weekend

Firefighters fought twelve minor fires during the long weekend including a vacant Alma Road home that burned out with no value. Grass fires totaled four along with incidents at 2704 Northcrest Dublin Road and near the railroad tracks by Chrysler Boat. They also handled three store fires, a storage room blaze, three car fires, twelve ambulance calls, water removal from two homes and three other services.

Sewage Plant Expansion Considered by State Board

A proposal to expand a North Texas Municipal Water District sewage plant east of Plano will be heard by the Texas Water Quality Board on August 9 in the Stephen F. Austin Building Austin at 9 am. Present facilities serve 43 000 people and an added plant would serve 180 000. treated wastewater runs to Rowlett Creek and Lake Ray Hubbard.
