Fifteen Cent Steaks Stir Plainfield Prices and News
Plainfielders report Delmonteo steaks at fifteen cents and potatoes at a dollar per hundred weight may be a real local trend, claims by Jork Slevin of Franklin Place and George Webster of Weasterwell Avenue. They say the war and the Graft board drive costs, with shipboard supply lines and home grown needs shaping the economy. Andrew Kenny travels to New Orleans, while Slevin and Webster have been away six months, mostly in Florence Holmes. Experts note drillers earning five dollars daily and laborers four to five dollars per hour as production accelerates in the war effort. Swenson forecasts a spring boom, a snowstorm grills the region as travel from Chicago to Washington passes cold. Webster contemplates training as an officer, with Brother Frank Webster already in France as an engineer.
