Clem Bechtel to Enlist as Aviator in War Effort

Six months as driver with American Red Cross ambulance on the French front ends with Clem Bechtel being discharged and placed under aviation training. He expects to go to Italy or Egypt to train as a flyer, with hopes of higher rank, good pay, and serving God and country. He writes to his parents of wartime duty, personal growth, and sending souvenirs and films to remember him by.

Proposed System of Policing Counties

His Interlative commission weighs replacing multiple county forces with a unified system. A referendum would accompany any plan, but a legislature next session may not receive such recommendation. In one county 145 municipalities show numerous police chiefs, duplication ensues. Possible mergers of municipalities for joint policing and salary control by county boards are also under review.

St Marys T A B Society hosts a Thanksgiving flag raising and patriotic demonstration on West Fourth Street in Plainfield. A fifty foot flag will be raised with a service flag for eight TA B members in the army or navy. Local leaders will speak as Fife and Drum Corps provide marching music. Camp Dix Men Begin Grenade Training for War Service

Camp Dix selectives start a grenade course under two French officers with Somme front experience. The 10-acre field features trenches and a half-scale Somme-like layout. Lieuts Meslier and Savery, both Croix de Guerre veterans, supervise along with Frank Fripp and G T Purves. Training will begin as transfers from the 311th Regiment prepare to depart for the Southern cantonment.

Government Accepts Elks Offer of 250000 Hospital

Government accepts the Elks offer of a 250000 hospital to be built on Parker Hill Boston using funds from the Elks War Relief Fund. The Surgeon General says the facility will rehabilitate wounded soldiers with operations to restore speech hearing and movement. It will employ people with disabilities in productive trades.

Big Lion Act Delights Plainfield Theatre Audience

The Big Lion act at the Plainfield Theatre continues to thrill crowds with Nubian dancers and a steel arena display led by 30 year old Mr. Taylor and his wife.
