Plainfield Draft Numbers Drawn in National Army Call

Fifty to Six hundred men in Plainfield district learned their draft numbers as part of a national mobilization. Affected men from Plainfield, Scotch Plains, Fanwood and Mountainside await official figures from Washington while exemptions are prepared at the Common Council. Troop movement for Company K and Troop D is planned as the New Jersey National Guard mobilizes for training and potential deployment to Europe.

One Killed and Injured by Lightning Storm

A lightning strike during a noon thunderstorm today caused one death and one serious injury in Halstead. Charles Williams, a well known local figure, was instantly killed when a bolt struck a tree they were sheltering under, and property damage followed.

Indignation Over Sidewalk Order Faces Court Challenge

The Common Council considers enforcing an ordinance requiring sidewalk construction and maintenance by property owners at their expense. Some landowners along North avenue protest, citing wartime labor and costs. Affected neighbors warn they will not comply, planning to seek legal relief.

Death Comes to Mrs. W. H. Riley

Mrs. W. H. Riley died last evening at her son's home 11 Myrtle Avenue. She was eighty one, born in Philadelphia, active in early women rights, founder of the Orange and Nile Women’s Club, and a member of the Unitarian church. The funeral will be private at her late residence. She is survived by her husband and son.

Company K Mobilizes for Sea Girt and Anniston

Troop D Heads to Sea Girt for National Guard Mobilization

At a weekly drill Captain Daniel Runkle announced Troop D will assemble at headquarters in Newark on Wednesday at 9 am and entrain for Sea Girt to join in the New Jersey National Guard mobilization. The unit will merge with troops from East Orange and Ironbound to form the First Squadron and may be sent to Anniston Alabama for intensive training. New officers and recruits were announced, including changes in staff and two new enlistments.
