Robert N Crane questions Freeholder Bird s May petition signing alleging Bird insisted on his name and friends influence. Crane filed May s petition with City Clerk Carroll showing seventy signatures mostly workers. Crane says petitions count little as the public votes by secret ballot at the primary.
Senator Ernest R. Ackerman of Plainfield announces his campaign for the Republican nomination to the U S House from New Jersey's Fifth District. He cites his business experience and vows to push for steady postwar policy guided by free enterprise and American principles.
James J. McCann of Division street Plainfield announces his candidacy for county registrar on the Democratic ticket after strong local and county support. Former Elizabethan, he moved to Plainfield twelve years ago and now serves as motor vehicle agent, with a history in Democratic circles and Red Cross and Knights of Columbus drives. He faces only Beardsley of Fanwood as a likely opponent.
Local draft board members will receive monthly pay from 50 to 200 dollars depending on registration counts under a new order by Provost Marshal General Crowder. The change raises compensation from ten cents per registrant, acknowledging the full-time service and sacrifice of boards managing up to 11,000 registrants or more.
Harry Goeller of Newstreet, part of a five man Plainfield selectives group sent to Camp Humphreys, Va., on July 5, was brought north last week as part of a provisional company bound for overseas. He first went to Camp Humphreys as acting corporal in the Engineers' Corps and was later chosen for the next assignment.
King Booze won a surprise Senate move favoring wartime Prohibition and a delay to July 1, 1919. Law would let the President create zones around coal mines munitions plants factories and ships where liquor sales are banned.
Preparations are under way for the second annual Farm Exhibition at Parish House Hall in Netherwood on September 7. War Garden entries total 32 with cups and cash prizes, surpassing last year by five. Hundreds of vegetable and fruit entries are promised, with flowers wheat sheaves and corn stacks on display. The event, organized by Netherwood Residents Association, will feature homecanning results from neighborhood ladies. Entries must arrive by 10 a.m. September 7.
Mrs Louise Anderson Geier widow of Jacob Geier died suddenly Monday after a stroke. The funeral was at her Craig place home with Rev B H McCoy officiating and burial in Evergreen Cemetery. She was born in Sweden sixty years ago and lived in Plainfield since 1885. Survived by three daughters Mrs Herbert Smith and Misses Clara and Madeline Geier.
Three prominent city firefighters resigned this week, including Vincent Carroll of No 1 house who joined Caleg Chemical Works in Bound Brook. Jens Claassen and James Mel will depart in Sun, with Claassen moving to Armour Beet Co East Third Street plant and Mel taking a machinist post at Pond Tool Works. Carroll and Claassen each served eleven years. McDonough, four with a winter layoff, returns from Newark rubber sales. The department now has about fifteen men, as many eligible candidates decline due to long hours and low pay. Captain Mehl of No 3 seeks demotion consideration with no action yet taken.
John A Henry son of Mrs A M Henry of Emerson Ave Plainfield promoted to first lieutenant in the army. He trained at Camp McClellan after leaving Plainfield a year ago and passed officer examinations. Born in Plainfield he studied at St Marys School and a business course at the College. He was purchasing agent for the Spicer plant in South Plainfield. He has many friends in Plainfield proud of his achievement.
Hartley Manner's war drama Out There starts its season in Allentown Pennsylvania next Monday night. The production is managed by Samuel W. Cunningham, formerly Plainfield Theatre treasurer, with Joseph A. Lane of East Front Street as advance representative. Both men are seasoned in the theatre world and are expected to steer the tour through key Southern and Western cities. Mrs. Cunningham holds a prominent local position.
Ms. Charlies Clark formerly of Way Road has spent the summer at Atlantic City and is visiting the home of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Newton Crane at 525 Madison Avenue.
Mayor Calkins, joined by Commissioner Raymond of Newark and Mayor Segar of Passaic, was appointed to work with Governor Edge and the State Board of Health on a wartime child hygiene program. The effort follows a National Council of Defense push to study crowded living conditions and devise an effective state plan.
Henry Trottner, Girard B Harris, Harold G Davis and Corrad E Appin, listed in Plainfield's limited service class, will depart tomorrow for Camp Green North Carolina. They leave Plainfield on a 8:35 train engine to Elizabethtown then travel south. George Jackson and Norman will be sent to Camp Dix next afternoon. Louis La Rock Jr of Providence R I has returned home after a visit in Plainfield Hopatcong.
Two people were killed and two injured when an automobile failed to stop at the Schilling crossing between Picton and Goodman's Crossing as an express train of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad struck it at 6 40 last night. The dead are Miss M Johns and Mrs A Justice. The four occupants were employed by Standard Aero Corp. at Rahway. Miss Johns daughter of Maria Johns, leaves siblings and grandparents. Funeral set for Grace M BC church.
The latest induction wave includes thirty-one Plainfield youths to depart September 6 for Camp Humphreys Virginia and Camp Dix New Jersey. Families of James Heron and Schillinger brothers are among those called, with several already serving in France and at sea. Local citizens gather at Elke Club on Watchung Avenue for a mobilization supper and to receive final rosters.
Edward McEvoy Leo Wilson Albert Coffey and William Simon all residents enlisted in the Merchant Marine. The action draws local response as four men commence service aboard national merchant vessels.
