A century ago Edinburgh University professors aimed to publish a flawless typographic specimen. Six proof readers checked pages, posted them in the hall with a £50 reward for errors, and left each page two weeks. Yet the issued work contained errors including a flaw in the first line of page one.
A traveling fakir performs a coin egg trick in the market, selling eggs for five cents each and cracking them to reveal half eagle coins. The curious incident ends with the performer pocketing more eggs and a dollar drop into a beaker, leaving the countryman perplexed about the hoax. The column then notes ripe blackberries in Salem and a reflection on goodwill and charity, followed by a comment on St. Mary’s canal reservoir and the large artificial dam under enlargement.
