Veterans adjourn as Graz Army week winds down
The fourth day of Graz Army week in Washington shaded by drizzle drew veterans through Grand Army quarters and hotel streets. Colonel Lincoln Wirh and Captain Weissert vied for commander in chief with Weissert chosen by acclamation as veterans applauded at the National Encampment. Weissert, born Canton August 17 1844, served in the Eighth Wisconsin infantry then Nashville campaign, wounded at the knee, and earned repeated commendations before rising to department commander. The event included addresses by national officers and a reception at the Pension Building ending with a promenade concert by the Marine Band and Clara Barton remarks at the historic Seventeenth Street mansion.
