In Somerville New Jersey the Republican County Convention elected temporary chairman W W Howland and secretary J Prefinghausen. Four candidates vied for senator including Lewis A Thompson and after four ballots Thompson won the nomination with 20 votes on the final ballot. Also named were Quilliarons W Somers for Franklin and Fred A Jones for borough duties. The convention then adjourned amid lively activity.
Paris dispatch reports Marshal MacMahon dead and composer Charles Gounod dying. The cable service notes the deaths and health status affecting prominent figures, with Paris as the source of the alarming bulletin and New York reacting to the news.

W L Patton jailed on charges of byhypothecating funds of creditors. Henry L Patton is named in bankruptcy proceedings totaling about 60,000 due the estates, with liabilities around 788,000 and assets under 11,000. Affidavits accuse Patton of transferring 250,000 to his own account and losing it in unsuccessful speculation. Securities valued at 60,000 were allegedly disposed to the Holland Company and Bank of the Manhattan as collateral, with Patton admitting taking them. Arrest followed by Judge Patterson in the Supreme Court.
The Postal Telegraph Company office was closed this morning by an execution from Jos ce Mosher's Court, in a three year hire dispute over rigs. The suit sought payment for rides and a verdict ruled against the defendant. The case involved missed receipts and an ongoing process to stay or proceed with the order. The plaintiff, represented by Harry Ranyon, noted the authority of the judgment and the impending proceedings.
Representatives of Du tiet No 10 L O O F of New Jersey met in No 44 lodge rooms. Edward E. Kellar of Memorial Lodge Elizabeth was elected District Deputy to succeed Cheries W. Tadlman. After adjournment attendees went to Jacot's retreat where expressions of distress were noted.
