Third Mid-stemmer Festival and Gambling Den Raid
The Swedish Benevolent Society held their third annual Mid-Summer Festival on Saturday night on the mountain near the look-out with athletic contests singing and dancing and the Hwel Quartet performing. Officers Kielly and Sanders raided a gambling den on South Second street capturing four players James Lane James ONeill Zebediah Freeman and Leander Brown. Lane was fined fifteen dollars and the others fifty dollars each awaiting Grand Jury. An officer found a wandering animal on the railroad track near the gas house and it was taken to Robert’s. Carman Rothbery let his horse out of the North Plainfield stable and it wandered into Harris Goldstein’s garden causing about three dollars worth of vegetable loss. Justice Sperry awarded that amount to the plaintiff. Excitement grows over Aunt Fanny’s Health Revive la drink advertised at L. W. Randolph’s drug store offering a free trial package.
