A scandalous shortage traced to County Treasurer Tormey and juror payments reveals years of misaccounting from 1854 onward. Expert William Chambers finds about $800 missing for the year ending Aug 1, with total discrepancies around $24,000. The investigation notes lax practices by Treasurers Adams Gardner and misused checks to Albany and contractors.
Edward R. Carter, a 29 year old clerk at the National Bank of Commerce, confessed to miscounting and misplacing $278,000 in bonds while handling coupons and maturities. Bank officials deem the loss not serious given capital and surplus. Carter, held at police headquarters, faced family shock as his daughter rushed to the scene.
Denver reports Mrs. Aicha Pike, wife of F L D Pike formerly a private secretary, arrested on burglary charges after entering James R. Rives’s home through a window and later with a key while the family was away. She stored plunder with Mrs. Bertha K Shaw before returning to Shaw’s residence. Shaw denies knowledge of the crime.
A brief, fragmentary report recalls a ten minute train stop during which a passenger intervened in a street fight and was beaten, returning with blood to describe the melee. The tale includes gas bill bluster and a lighted banner lingering in memory.
A damaged OCR fragment shows scattered figures and price hints with stray letters. No clear event or entities are identifiable beyond mentions of cents and pricing notes.
Timetable fragment lists Plainfield departure at 0.44 pm and 6.05 pm with stops at Wwerwarp and other points, plus travel times to New Orleans and westward routes. Includes names J H Olhauen and G eneral Superintendent Baldwin and general notice about ticket agents and schedules.
