New Jersey Best Bet for Tariff Support in 1886 Politics
The Jersey City Journal argues New Jersey should back protective tariffs to save its major industries from free trade. It links pensions and economic policy to political outcomes, cites figures like General Patterson and figures from Tennessee, and mentions a New Jersey party led by local figures while noting endorsements from prominent individuals such as Hon. Edmund L. Pitts and references to Alloce’s Porous Piles as remedies.

Early American Voting Confusion Voices Prohibition Dissent
Fragmentary 18th and 19th century account notes the suffrage struggle from colonial times to 1807. It describes how free white male, female, and colored voters caused confusion, fraudulent practices, and eventual legal tightening restricting voting to qualified white males aged 21 or older.

Fighting in East Buffalo Camp 7 ends with volleys
Yronger burned and bullets flew as soldiers and guards repelled attackers at Camp 7 East Buffalo near midnight. They faced a train stoning by nonunion men on the Erie trestle and the gang scattered after two volleys fired by the guard. Separately at Suspension Bridge twenty strikers attacked unprotected switchmen in the Central yards, using broken coupling pins and coal lumps before the switchmen fled. A passenger train later ran into an open switch but no injuries occurred.
