May 5 1901 Pittston Gazette reports trolley firms risk public health by running open cars in rain and cold. Trenton board of health enforces rule allowing closure on stormy days with 25 dollar fines for violations. Citizens urge protections and wider adoption to spare passengers from damp, unhealthy rides.
Advertising car No.3 of the Wallace Shows rolls into town with 19 men prepared to plaster the city with posters announcing the circus appearance on May 22. The crew immediately begins wall-to-wall promotions to attract crowds.
Jessie Castner of ville and Orrin Cowell with Harry Davis of Scranton visit the city. Elizabeth Grimth returns home from Ransom. Miss Tessie Martin visits Mrs. William Allen at Rosenstrant. Benjamin Bowkley returns from New York City to his parents. Mrs L. B. Richard, of Scranton, guests of her mother on Broad street. Mr. and Mrs. Bert MacDonald of Dunmore visit William street acquaintances. Alice Cook returns to Renova after cousin Jennie Lew’s arrest in Market Street. Ray Frick librarian. Mae Staley organist. grave Surdam secretary treasurer missionary society Bertha Morris. Union Social Club to host Armory Hall social Wednesday. Also ad copy promotes Kemp’s Balm for coughs with trial bottles.
Pittston showcases a lively program featuring a double sextette scene from Flora and a yacht party sequence. Prominent figures like Mr Bryden and J. Trim led performers, with budgeted praise for the clever eclipses and overall merit of the entertainment.
The Fifth Legislative District convention favored John P. Elkin for governor by a 24 to 18 margin over George Mitchell. The gathering elected Howell W. Hamon temporary chair and M. B. Neymon secretary, then approved permanent organization amid contests in Avoca Second District. A delegate pledge instructed for Elkin and Hooper pledged to contest Mitchell’s nomination at the state convention.
A large parade marked the corner stone ceremony of the new Satholle church led by Rt Rev M J Hoban with many Polish societies and bands marching up North Main toward the junction. The event drew about 5000 participants in three divisions with numerous out of town groups attending and clergy including Rev Fathers OMalley McManus and others assisting.
